Sterling Bullet - AKA Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500

We must have been asleep at the switch. Not paying as close attention to the medium truck market as we do to the light truck market, AutoPacific and VehicleVoice staffers were tipped to the Sterling Bullet by our colleague Bill Senefsky of Automotive West Group. Actually Sterling went public with the Bullet on March 6. Public introduction is in late Fall, 2007.

Apparently Dodge dealers are a bit "miffed" by Sterling getting this hardcore work truck. The question has to be asked, however, what will be the future of the Sterling Bullet when Chrysler Group is spun away from DaimlerChrysler? Will there be a clause in the deal maintaining the product or will it be still-born?
The Sterling Bullet is a mild derivative of the heavy duty Dodge Ram. Part of DaimlerChrysler's Freightliner universe, Sterling got its mitts on the 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel Ram and put its own front fenders lights and grille on the body in white. Their website shows two cabstyles - regular cab and quad cab - unlike Dodge, there is no Mega Cab. There is also no "pickup" version but several commercial versions - "Wrecker", "Flatbed", "Dump", "Crane", "Contractor", "Box", "Tow", "Service". The Bullet is available in 4x2 and 4x4 versions with either cabstyle.

The press release for the Bullet is below the fold.

Hyundai Enters Luxury Segment
Will Wonders Ever Cease?
Who'd have thunk it! Not many years ago Hyundai cars were the butt of jokes. A laughing stock. Owners were ashamed of them - and angry too. Often for good reason.

But not any more. Hyundai now offers a range of reliable, well styled, good value vehicles. Sedans, SUVs, a Minivan, even a sporty coupe. Their US sales are up - way up versus 10 years ago. About 455,000 units in 2006, more than Pontiac, for example.
The current top of the line sedan in the US is the Azera, a $25,000 - $30,000, 3.8L V6 powered front wheel drive 4-door sedan. Soon the Veracruz Crossover SUV will top its lineup. Not for long! Hyundai will soon introduce the "BH" sedan. A concept version will be shown at the NY Auto Show in early April as the Hyundai Genesis; the production version will be introduced in South Korea late this year and in the US in 2008.

Can Hyundai make a true luxury car? No doubt about it. I expect the BH to be full-size, full-featured, a rear wheel drive vehicle, with a powerful V8 engine. We hear that the output of the V8 will be over 350-horsepower. Quality...well it won't be Lexus level, but I'll bet it is at the Mercedes/BMW/Audi level - maybe better than some.
How about style? Some Hyundai vehicles have had quirky style. I'm not really sure what the BH will actually look like. But I have seen some sketches of the Hyundai Genesis concept car. The renderings show a car that is a little too Mercedes CLS-like for my taste. Our guess is that these renderings are way exaggerated. For instance, the roofline won't be as coupe-like and the style will not be as swoopy.
Exterior style and interior package have to be carefully balanced. My guess is that the production sedan will be more S-Class sedan like than the sketches suggest.
The Product is only the start...
Just developing a true luxury entry is a major accomplishment. Making it profitable is something else altogether. Lexus has shown that it can be done. But the Infiniti and Acura experience suggests that the whole exercise may involve a huge investment and take years to be profitable. Hyundai may or may not go with a unique luxury brand name, but either way, this is a major undertaking. Luxury cars are all about pride and prestige, and this isn't an easy hill to take.

2008 Audi A5/S5 Revealed: 2007 Geneva Auto Show
Four years after introducing the Nuvolari concept at 2003's Geneva show, Audi brought the production reality to the 2007 Geneva show in the A5 and S5 coupe. Audi is heavily expanding their product range, including the Q7, R8, A5/S5, and upcoming Q5. A return to the coupe market with the A5 is part of a strategy for improving image and sales in the States, where sales are expected to begin in November 2007. The A5 range was given a formal introduction in Geneva, with some help from the band Yello (most widely known for the song "Oh Yeah," used in Ferris Bueller's Day Off). A new Yello song, featured at the intro, will be used for A5 advertising worldwide.

Editor's Note
We go round and round on this at AutoPacific and VehicleVoice. Not on the A5 specifically, but on the demand, desirability, design of coupes in the United States. Internally, we have a pro coupe camp and an anti coupe camp. I was once reminded by a wizened old mechanic that "It don't cost any more to carry around an extra two doors and they come in mighty handy." Guess I have always followed that adage. In fact, I have concluded over the years that coupes are more of an ego trip for car designers and senior management than providing a solid business case. Oh, I know, great reason for Mustang and MINI, but on the whole the market for coupes is much thinner than the number of coupe offerings available.
The A5 is a handsome car and a welcome addition to Audi's lineup especially in Europe where coupes have a stronger pull. Sure, A5 will sell pretty well, but it'll peak within 18-months, stabilize and then begin the inexorable slide downward, just like every sporty coupe in the past.
Yello's mechanical sound sampling aside, the A5 and S5 should make smart additions to the Audi lineup. These are meant to compete with the BMW 3-Series coupe. The TT keeps its position as a sports car for Audi (competing with BMW'z Z4 and Porsche's Boxster), while the A5 offers a larger, more comfortable package with seating for four. The A5 gets a long wheelbase and short front overhangs, with a longitudinally mounted engine and either standard front- or optional all-wheel drive. Instead of being based on the current A4, the A5's underpinnings preview the next A4.

The car introduced in Geneva was to European specifications, but it does tell us what we can expect in the U.S. powertrain lineup. Though Audi is committed to introducing diesels in the States, the A5 is not first in line to offer diesels. The U.S. lineup will include the S5, with its 364HP 4.2L FSI V8, and the A5 3.2, with its 265HP 3.2L FSI V6. The S5 gets a sports suspension, eighteen-inch wheels and tires, and two-stage ESP to get full benefit of its sporting nature.

Luxury Coupe Gets Long List of Bells and Whistles
Along with muscular good looks, aggressive face, and typically high-quality Audi interior, the A5 and S5 will offer the latest luxury and convenience features. A5 gets the latest MMI and a new key system. The new key doesn't have a typical metal key, but communicates with the car whenever it is in the cockpit. Not only can it start the car without you having to insert a key and turn, but it can store vehicle information. The standard key is a smart key, but the keyless entry and start systems are optional. Bi-xenon cornering lights, LED daytime running lights (like those on the S8), a panoramic sunroof, a rearview camera, DVD navigation, and a Bang & Olufsen developed premium audio system are all among the options list. Not on the list? A hard-drive navigation and music storage system.

2007 Chicago Auto Show: Nissan Updates Pathfinder, Armada, and Titan
Trucks Get New Interiors and Features
For the 2004 model year, Nissan introduced its first full-size truck and SUV, following up for 2005 with the mid-size Pathfinder and Frontier. For 2008MY, introduced around the 2007 Chicago auto show, Nissan freshened Armada, Titan, and Pathfinder where each needed it most. All three sport better-looking and higher-quality interiors with more convenience features for the SUVs and subtle exterior updates, as Nissan took the opportunity of a normal mid-cycle update to address some areas of criticism.

Pathfinder: Shift_Adventure
Pathfinder offers the most brawn behind its facelift. Under the hood, its bigger brother's 5.6L V8 becomes available. Nissan is adding a large V8 at a time when it seems consumers are searching for high-fuel-efficiency options because they see the mid-size SUV market carrying about 25% of its sales in V8 models. With a V8 in the parts bin, Nissan decided to use it. And it should make for a nice package. Pathfinder also gets a new hood, grille, front/rear bumpers, and rear liftgate to the exterior, with some of the front changes made to accommodate the V8. Inside, there is a new center stack and console and new convenience features.

Armada: Shift_Comfort
Armada takes a new front fascia, new headlights and fog lights, a new one-piece roof rack, and a revised rear fascia, including integrating the rear window washer fluid nozzle into the CHMSL. The powertrain carries over, including the optional flex-fuel version.

Inside, there is a more user-friendly layout and, based on the pre-production trucks we saw in February, a higher-quality look and feel. There are new interior colors and fabrics, a new gated shifter, available woodgrain accents, optional heated steering wheel, revised steering wheel controls, and updated gauge cluster. Rear-seat passengers may be pleased with the larger screen for rear-seat entertainment systems

Titan: Shift_Capacity
Titan is the underdog of the full-size pickup market, with a narrowly defined lineup not matching competition and an advertising budget well below the Big Three and the all new Toyota Tundra in its launch mode. Changes for 2008MY improve the oft-criticized interior and add capacity for hauling stuff and going off road. The biggest change is new long-wheelbase Crew Cab and King Cab models, with a seven-foot bed for the Crew and an eight-foot bed for the King Cab, which may help with the working crowd. A PRO-4X off-road package may catch the eye of trucking enthusiasts. The PRO-4X gets Rancho shock absorbers, a lower final gear ratio, more skid plates, an electronic locking rear differential, white-faced interior gauges, and body-color exterior trim.

Other than the new beds, Titan's exterior and interior changes are minor. The 5.6L V8 engine and transmission carryover. The front gets a new bumper, headlight, fog lamps, and grille. Along the side there are new wheel-lip moldings and wheels (including optional twenty-inchers). Inside you'll find a new seat design, revised gauge cluster, new wood trim accents, and revised HVAC controls. Titan adds optional Bluetooth and XM capability, but does not get most of the convenience options of the SUVs. GVWR and payload are up 500 pounds to 9500 pounds.

More Convenience Features for SUVs
There is a new hard-drive system for navigation and music storage in Nissan's cupboard, and Armada and Pathfinder are among the entries that get to offer it. The hard-drive uses 9.3GB for music storage (loaded through owners' CDs) and an unspecified amount to run and store navigation information. Armada buyers can order up the hard drive without navigation and get a 9.3GB Music Box, Pathfinder buyers must take the whole system. Because of the hard drive operation, the navigation function should refresh faster and offer better-quality graphics. In the Armada it also works with XM for real-time traffic updates.

Both SUVs now offer optional Intelligent Key, with Nissan's corporate twist-start, a heated steering wheel, and Bluetooth hands-free system. There is a new, larger multi-function screen that enables buyers to order the rear-view camera separate from the navigation system. The Armada now offers front sonar parking sensors as well as the optional rear camera.

2007 Chicago Auto Show: 2008 Toyota Highlander
Highlander Evolves with More Size and Power
Ahead of sales in July 2007, Toyota used its traditional opening press conference of the 2007 Chicago auto show to launch the 2008 Highlander. Toyota's new Highlander keeps its personality as a car-based crossover SUV, updated to the latest Camry/Avalon platform. The new Highlander is bigger and heavier, but Toyota gives it more power, with both the Hybrid and new standard 3.5L V6 estimated to deliver 270HP. The Hybrid goes on sale shortly after the standard model.

Highlander already offered a third-row seat, but the extra three inches in wheelbase and four inches in length should make for a more comfortable interior. The new size is a bit bigger than the Honda Pilot and the same length as the Chevrolet Equinox. It is bigger than the Mazda CX-7 and Ford Edge, but smaller than Mazda's CX-9 or the newly renamed Ford Taurus X (the XSUV formerly known as the Ford Freestyle). Highlander is better sized for those using the third row as occasional-use seating, instead of emergency seats.
So, the question is whether or not the new 2008 out-Pilots the excellent Honda Pilot?

Highlander's current 3.3L V6 and four cylinder engines are dropped with the change, enabling Toyota to deliver a base Highlander with 55HP more than the outgoing model. The upgraded powertrain and extra space will step the Highlander more clearly up from the latest RAV4, which launched for 2005 with the 3.5L V6 and a third-row seat. The second-generation Highlander looks improved in every way, though it does not push the envelope of car-based SUVs. Toyota pushed the Highlander in the right ways for this segment, one that appeals to families and practical users. Style is good, but functionality is better.

Styling is dynamic and progressive, yet evolutionary. The new face includes a grille that ties back to the Tundra, emphasizing the Highlander's capability. For Sport and Limited models, standard wheels will be nineteen-inchers, contributing to a tough look. Highlander continues to be offered in three trim levels, with the Hybrid offered in two. There are Base, Sport, and Limited models for the standard V6 and Base and Limited models for the Hybrid.

Among improvements to interior functionality is the ability to convert the second-row captain's chairs into a bench seat for three. When the seat isn't needed, it stows into a compartment below the front center console. As with many of the latest second-row seats, Highlander's second row slides and reclines. The third row, which can be deleted if the buyer chooses, gets foldable headrests enabling a flat cargo area. Ordering anything but the Base model gets a standard rear-view camera system, independent of ordering the optional navigation system. New options for the Highlander include a power liftgate (operable from the key fob) and bundling Bluetooth with the JBL audio system.

2007 Chicago Auto Show: BMW B7 Alpina - The Uber 7-Series
500HP, Tweaked Chassis, and Bodykit Create Uber 7
Though announced by BMW North America last year, the BMW Alpina B7 finally arrived at the 2007 Chicago auto show. The B7 Alpina is a superfast version of the regular-wheelbase 750i, created by longtime BMW tuner Alpina from the 750i and fully warranted by BMW. The prior 745i was offered with a 325HP 4.4L Valvetronic V8, and it is this engine that Alpina supercharged to 500HP and 516 lb-ft. of torque. To go along with the power, the B7 Alpina sports cosmetic cues and Alpina badges inside and out.

Along with supercharging a Valvetronic engine for the first time, which required specific engine enhancements, Alpina tweaked the suspension. There is firmer calibration of springs and shock absorbers, created a new exhaust system, the 7's Active Roll Stabilization for countering body roll in corners, the European 760i's larger brakes, and twenty-inch wheels and tires. Alpina strengthened the differential, but the full torque is still limited to the first two gears of the six-speed automatic transmission.

Outside, B7 Alpina's subtle cues include a specific front bumper and spoiler, twenty-spoke Alpina wheels, a rear spoiler, and Alpina B7 badges. As pictured, the traditional Alpina blue metallic paint is available. Interior touches include B7 doorsill trim, blue background color for the instrument cluster, and Alpina lettering. The steering wheel sports an Alpina logo, is trimmed with Lavalina leather, and has upshift/downshift buttons.

For its nearly $116,000 price tag, the B7 Alpina makes 7-Series options like Sirius radio, Comfort Access (keyless entry and start), heated rear seats, and the uplevel Logic7 audio system standard. The only options the B7 Alpina offers are active cruise control, rear-seat entertainment system, high-definition radio, and an enhanced night vision system.
Why Not an M7?
Alpina has been tricking out BMW's since 1964, though better-known in Europe and BMW enthusiast circles. The only Alpina-modified BMW offered to U.S. buyers so far was a version of the BMW Z8 roadster, which only 450 buyers were able to get.
So, Alpina has a long BMW history, but why not use the M division to create a super 7? According to BMW, because Alpina focuses on high performance with moderate rpm and automatic transmissions, more appropriate to a luxury sedan like the 7-Series. The M division is known for high-performance, with high-revving engines and either manual or SMG transmissions.

2007 Chicago Auto Show: 2008 Pontiac G8
Pontiac Joins the Rear-Wheel-Drive Revolution
In early 2008, Pontiac gets a new top-range entry with an aggressively styled, performance-oriented rear-drive large sedan. The G8 GT concept was introduced this week at the Chicago auto show to an eager crowd, and VehicleVoice contributors were on hand. Yeah, they called it a concept, but there is very little that will change between now and next year's sales launch. As we walked the show after the introduction, the car was clearly a star. We heard people gushing, enthusiastic, and hungry for more information on the car. The car was continually surrounded.

So why is G8 causing so much a stir? Because under the go-fast, I'll-take-on-the-world looks is a platform and powertrain that really can help you get there. Unlike the short-lived GTO revival that had the goods but not the looks, the G8 has both. The rear-drive setup includes an independent rear suspension, promising solid handling, and the powertrain lineup includes a base V6 with about 261HP and an 362HP small-block 6.0L V8.

The G8 will be Pontiac's flagship, using the global RWD Architecture of the upcoming new-century Camaro. Initial production will be in Australia, where the car is sold as the Commodore SS. Eventually, GM would like to build it in the States, along with the Camaro. The G8 is a Holden Commodore with a Pontiac nose, effectively. Though the standard transmission is an automatic (five speeds for the V6 and six for the V8), a six-speed manual for the V8 will be added. (The concept held the manual, though that transmission will be a late launch.) And by using GM's version of cylinder deactivation, Active Fuel Management, when the V8 takes the automatic, you'll be able to get this V8 with as little fuel-cost hit as possible.

The 2007 show car is what you'll see in dealers, excepting the twenty-inch wheels, a lowered ride height, and the interior and exterior colors. The Pontiac badge is only a test to gauge reaction. If it plays well, it will become the new Pontiac dart. We will see G8 and G8 GT models, with standard eighteen and optional nineteen-inch wheels. The nineteen-inch wheels will come with a Sport package available on both trim levels; that package will also include elements typical of such packages (rear spoiler, leather shift knob, alloy pedals, and leather-wrapped steering wheel). As you might expect, the G8 gets the V6 and the G8 GT the V8. Among the smart moves is making the Sport package available on either trim level; even if you opt for the V6 for price, insurance, or fuel economy reasons, it won't prevent you from getting the cool looks.

Naming Notes
In many ways, the G8 is a successor to the last GTO (2004 to 2006). It is the next-generation of the GTO's platform, though in four-door form instead of coupe form. So why not call it GTO?
Well, along the four doors instead of two, the GTO name set the twenty-first century coupe up with a lot of baggage. Buyers expected something that looked as much a sporty car as the upcoming Camaro and Challenger will and the 2005 Mustang does, but GTO had a sedate exterior. GTO's driving dynamics and platform were well up to the task of succeeding the legendary pony cars, but between its bland exterior and expensive price tag, buyers didn't take to it.
G8 has a face that clearly says "Get out of my way," a muscular stance, and nicely flared wheel wells. But going with name G8 will help ensure the sedan will be taken on its own terms, while GTO was saddled with a history it didn't live up to.

2007 Chicago Auto Show: 2008 Volkswagen R32
Order Mine Now, Please
One of my favorite drives over the past few years was the first Volkswagen Golf R32, a 2004 limited-edition version of the last Golf. With a 250HP 3.2L V6, AWD, and a six-speed manual in a small, five-door hatchback, it was a blast to drive. VW imported only 5000 units.

At the 2007 Chicago auto show, Volkswagen introduced a new R32, this time using the latest Rabbit. The engine is the same 250HP 3.2L VR6, but instead of the six-speed manual it takes the six-speed DSG system, which means faster shifts than I can accomplish manually. To set it apart from regular Rabbits, the R32 takes standard eighteen-inch wheels and tires, R32 badging, a rear roof spoiler and body-color bumpers, side bump strips, door handles and mirrors. Standard equipment includes ESP, ABS, brake assist, and electronic brake distribution. The standard convenience feature list is more extensive than on regular Rabbits, including automatic climate control, heated seats, heated windshield wiper nozzles, a ten-speaker CD stereo, rain-sensing wipers, and cruise control.

On Line Order Placement
As before, VW will bring over 5000 R32s. Of those, 2000 will be brought over in 2007 and 3000 in 2008. The only sticking point is the price, which will be just over $32,000. For the performance and equipment level, it is a very reasonable price, but it still can seem like a big ticket for a Rabbit. If you want yours, you can go to an R32 microsite at www.vw.com and get in line to order one; the site will refer you to a dealer. The first 832 people to put money down on an order will get theirs in August 2007.

2007 Chicago Auto Show: Scion's 2008 xB and xD
Introduction Simulcast on SecondLife.com
While Scion Vice President, Mark Templin, was presenting the new xB and xD to media at the Chicago auto show, his alter-personality at secondlife.com (called an avatar) was doing the same. SecondLife.com is an online world that started in 2003 and is now "inhabited" by 3.4 million people globally, and this is the first vehicle introduction simulcast in this online world. Secondlife.com is another way to communicate with people who need transportation once they return to the physical world and automotive manufacturers are taking notice. This is especially relevant for Scion, a brand with an average buyer at only 30 years old and an owner base that is probably the most plugged in of all.

2008 xB and xD Take Over from First xB and xA
Scion was first envisioned as a line of cars with single lifecycles, though a box is expected to be a staple of the brand. Following this plan, the second-generation xB and the new xD were introduced at the 2007 Chicago auto show. xD takes the showroom space previously occupied by the xA. The xB arrives in dealers in April 2007 and the xD in August.

xB Inspired by t2B Concept
The xB is significantly larger than the first generation but remains true to its boxy shape philosophy. It looks much like the t2B concept shown at the 2005 New York auto show. Helping to move the larger product is the tC's 2.4L I4, delivering 158HP for the xB, and a five-speed manual transmission. (A four-speed automatic is optional.) Sixteen-inch wheels are standard, with optional wheel covers shared with xD. xB's new design includes turn indicators integrated into the side mirrors.

The additional size means a bigger interior. Rear seats fold 60/40, and the front seats fully recline. Driver information gauges are centered on the dash, and include a readout that can be toggled through clock, exterior temperature, MPG (average or instant), distance to empty, and average speed.

xD Based on the Toyota Yaris
Last year, Toyota launched the three-door hatchback and four-door sedan Yaris. This year comes the Scion xD five-door hatchback using the same platform. Among the differences is the xD's 128HP 1.8L DOHC 16v I4, versus Yaris's (and xA's) 105HP 1.5L engine. Standard transmission is a five-speed manual, with a four-speed automatic optional.

Based on the Yaris it may be, the xD gets a completely different interior and takes Scion design elements. Though xB moved its gauges to the center, the xD keeps its instrument panel in front of the driver. xD's rear seats fold 60/40, recline ten degrees, and can be adjusted into five different positions. Storage spaces are plentiful, including a hidden space under the rear cargo area and a tray below the steering wheel.

Skins for Your Audio LCD. Though standard on the xB and optional for the xD, there's an upgraded Pioneer audio system, with standard audio mini jack and iPod connectivity. One of the cool new features is the ability to download images, four-second video clips, or eight-second movies from the Pioneer website to be shown in the LCD faceplate. The Pioneer software allows for customers to load their own images and movies from a CD as well. xD's standard system still includes iPod and MP3 player connectivity, with track and artist's names showing on the head unit screen. Both the standard xD radio and the shared unit allow for connected players to be controlled through the steering wheel audio controls.

One Trim Level, Lots of Accessories
xB and xD are monospec vehicles, though customizable through a dizzying series of accessories and options. Even the standard cars are well equipped, and both include standard power steering, windows, and locks; air conditioning; remote keyless entry; ABS with electronic brake distribution and brake assist; six airbags (driver/front passenger, seat-mounted front seat sidebags, and front and rear side curtain bags); stability and traction control; and steering-wheel mounted controls.

2007 Chicago Auto Show: Mercury Revives Sable Name
Montego Gets A New Engine, A New Look, and An Old Name
Having decided that they cannot afford to give up the equity of the Taurus and Sable names, with the 2008MY facelift, these names return (click here for our comments on Ford's name changes, as the Five Hundred gets renamed Taurus and Freestyle the Taurus X). Ford presented these changes at the 2007 Chicago auto show complete with all the statistics backing up the fact the customers don't know what Montego is, but they know Sable. To the tune of three times as many consumers recognizing the Sable brand as the Montego brand. At least the name, as this new Sable is nothing like the first twenty years of Sable. In summer 2007, the Sable returns to dealers, and Mercury will have to find another excuse if sales don't pick up.

What the statistics don't do is explain why a consumer coming into a Mercury dealer looking for a Sable would not be convinced to buy a Montego or Milan. If Montego sales have been disappointing to Ford, a name change is not the magic wand to fix the problem. Mercury stands a good chance of selling more Sables than Montegos more because of the product changes that come along for the 2008MY than the name game.

The biggest shortcoming of the Montego was its weak powertrain, which was more bland than its styling. In fact, the 2006 Montego won AutoPacific's first Ideal Vehicle Award by virtue of its great package and ergonomics. With the 2008MY Sable, a 260HP 3.5L DOHC 24v V6 replaces the launch 3.0L V6, gets a six-speed automatic transmission, and delivers this extra power without a decrease in fuel economy. There is an exterior and interior update to go with the name and powertrain changes. Suspension setup doesn't change, but was revised and retuned, and there is a new power steering system with an intelligent electric pump. All-wheel drive is still offered, but is a new system now that the CVT is gone.

The new front fascia and headlights takes cues from Mariner and Mountaineer, successfully dressing up the Sable. Taillights and rear fascia are also revised, and there's more chrome to be found. Overall, the exterior changes give the Sable more sophistication than the Montego carried, and the updates to the Sable are the most successful and attractive of the three new models (Taurus and Taurus X also received similar updates). We also notice that Mercury the Sable name in more places and more prominently on this new version than they did Montego badges on that car; Sable is on the rear decklid and both sides of the car. The Montego wore its name only on the rear. That alone will make it easier for consumers to know what they are looking at.

Inside, changes include a revised sound package for much-improved NVH. The options list expands to include Ford's new voice-activated hands-free in-car communications system, Sync, developed with Microsoft and a standard auxiliary input jack. The Sable also gets optional two-tone interior with contrast stitching, taking a page from the Milan and Fusion's interior schemes.
The updates to this vehicle promise a more competitive vehicle, with a more interesting exterior look and a powertrain that competes in today's market. At the end of the day, Sable's success will be all about the product, just as Montego's weak sales were all about the product. A good name won't sell a bad product just as much as a bad name won't slow sales of a great product.

2007 Chicago Auto Show: Saturn Astra
General Motors' German Division Helps Out Their Domestic Import-Fighter
Saturn has been working with Opel to develop its latest products. This collaboration is helping to revive the Saturn brand with fresh styling and provide products with a strong, sophisticated personality. The Vue Crossover SUV, which was introduced at the 2007 Detroit show, is an Opel Antara wearing a Saturn badge. And Saturn's replacement for the much-maligned Ion is an Opel Astra with a Saturn badge. Saturn's Astra takes different front and rear bumpers, to meet North American bumper standards, but there is little else different between the two cars.
Partly because of this collaboration and the launch of the large Saturn Crossover SUV the Outlook, Saturn has one of the strongest growth prospects among "American" brands for the latter half of the decade.

The Saturn Astra launches late in 2007, by which time the oldest vehicle in Saturn's lineup will be the Sky. In a mere twenty months, Saturn will have revamped its entire range, all for the better. The division that had long been starved for product finally has a competitive, modern stable.

Saturn is taking a bit of a risk with Astra, however, in that it is offered in only three- and five-door hatchback versions. There will be no sedan or quad coupe this time around, but as U.S. consumers have become more accepting of hatchbacks over the past couple of years the danger is less than it would have been earlier this century. The five-door will be offered in two trim levels, XE and XR, with the three-door only in XR trim and geared toward a more "enthusiastic" driver. Astra's launch powertrain is a 140HP 1.8L four-cylinder, which gets a standard five-speed manual transmission and optional four-speed automatic. This powertrain is nothing special, but should hold its own among other compact cars.

The Astra gets a terrific interior to go along with its stylish exterior. We got the chance to quickly get in and check out the car immediately after the reveal, and the feel and finish of the switchgear is very satisfying and a clear cut above Astra's segment. As we've noted in other reviews, GM's interior work and development is finally reaching customers. Saturn's Astra looks, from our view, poised to be a star.

Another Step Forward in the Buying Experience
Along with five new products at dealers, Saturn is also working to improve their already strong customer service and buying process. After testing the program for eleven months, Saturn is going forward with a 24/7 live chat program. Customers will be able to talk online with a Saturn customer representative any time of the day or night at www.saturn.com.
Enhancing the test-drive experience is next on the list, which Saturn is doing with at-home test drives (or at work if preferred). Before you get on the road, the Saturn rep will take you through a fourteen-point checklist to help you decide if the car really matches your needs. Saturn's sales consultants will take you through a visual inspection and show how well the body fits together and the quality of overall paint job, help you figure out if the car has enough cupholders and storage bins for your life, help find the best seating position, and help with backing the vehicle into a parking space. Saturn will tailor the drive by preparing routes to match the consumer's daily driving life, pre-selecting music based on customer preferences, and allow customers to use the test drive to complete daily errands. Do you want to know how easily the Saturn Outlook will handle picking up the kids from school? Or if the Astra is comfortable on a highway commute? Saturn will create a test drive for you to get the answer.
Elements of Saturn's dealer experience that do not change include the no hassle, no haggle pricing, a thirty-day/1500-mile vehicle exchange program, and their regular new owner clinics and events.

2008MY Ford Super Duty Drive Evaluation
The Weather!
Ford planned a first class event. Lots of '08 Super Duties, on road evaluations, off road evaluations, trailer towing experiences etc etc. Many journalists. Lots of Ford factory people to talk to. And then the weather hit. Who would have thought that Texas could have that much freezing rain? Planes delayed hours and hours. The required re-routes forced us hundreds of miles off-course. Then the drive evaluations had to be cut to maybe 20% of the planned experience. Interstate highways blockaded off by law enforcement officials. Then hundreds of miles across Texas in a bus to get back to Dallas' DFW from which planes could actually take-off. I was glad my departing flight was delayed for hours - otherwise, I wouldn't have been on it at all.
Kudos to the Ford PR staff coping with such a series of challenges. They get an A+ for calmness and competence under fire. But I've gotta ask, "Why as the VehicleVoice and AutoPacific rep on many press previews do I end up with the 'challenging' weather?".
The Truck - Major Change for 2008 Model Year
Ford's revised Super Duty is already in production at at Kentucky Truck Plant, and called a 2008 model. Finished vehicles are still in containment (or were a few days ago) but will be shipped by the end of January.
I'd call the '08 Super Duty a Major Change Program (as contrasted with the all-new 2007 GMT 900 and 2007 Toyota Tundra, and the minor change 2007 Dodge Ram). The exterior of the cab is significantly freshened , the interior of the cab looks all new, the bed is largely carryover, the gas engines are carryover and the diesel engine is a major change (new fuel, new exhaust emissions standards, new 6.4L displacement, new fuel handling system) but based on the prior International supplied 6.0L V8 turbo Diesel.
The Strengths
The freshened exterior appearance looks good. Very masculine. In my opinion somewhat more so than the new Chevrolet Silverado, for example.
The interior is masculine, but contemporary with best in class feature availability. I'd never actually used electrically heated exterior rear view mirrors before this trip: they work just fine! The electronic navigation system was also a real aid when there was poor visibility and a route book challenged by blocked roads.
The bed includes an optional step to aid entry/egress. Not for everyone, but a useful feature nevertheless.

The new 6.4L 350 HP/650 lb.-ft of torque diesel is quiet, and has all the power/torque you could reasonably want in a pickup truck.
Ford now offers an F-450 Super Duty pickup straight from the factory. An F-450 pickup used to be available only as a conversion vehicle. This new entry gives Ford undisputed towing capacity bragging rights and a higher quality vehicle than conversions at a lower price. Well done Ford.
I also give Ford credit for continuing to offer manual transmissions and their 6.8L V10 gas engine. Not for everyone, but suits those for whom a diesel is just too costly.
Ride, handling, NVH and turning circle were all very, very good. Better than expected on all counts.
Ford's Tow Command is first rate, second to none.
The Weaknesses - No the Super Duty is Not Perfect
While the Regular Cab and the Crew Cab are fully competitive, the Super Cab (extended cab) falls short. It still has rear-hinged doors, that open only half way. And the side glass in the rear doors is the flip-open type, while the competition offers power, fully roll-down side glass.
Ford gets extra credit for offering a 6-speed manual transmission, but their automatic is only a 5-speed. Both GM and Dodge now offer 6-speed automatics.
Because of the dreadful weather, I was only able to drive one '08 Super Duty, an F-450 Crew Cab 4x4. This particular vehicle had a 4.88:1 rear end and could tow something over 24,000 pounds! Even so, I was surprised that we only got 10 mpg. Somehow, I had expected more. A 4.30:1 rear axle will soon be in production, and that will help with both fuel consumption and revs per mile, which were pretty high. Maybe the new diesel engine exhaust standard hurt fuel consumption more than I realized? Again, a 6-speed automatic might help here too.
The Diesel Dilemma
When Ford introduced their 6.0L Turbo Diesel a few years ago, there were several glitches that took ages to be fully resolved. And that was with carryover diesel fuel and carryover diesel exhaust emissions. Low sulfur diesel fuel became mandatory last October. And diesel vehicles produced after January 1, 2007 must meet more stringent exhaust emissions standards. Ford says the '08 diesel launch will go smoothly, and has taken steps to ensure that that is the case. Time will tell. Meantime the diesel option price has gone up from $5,300 to $6,800. That's a pretty big hit. And diesel fuel is no longer priced below regular gasoline. So how strong will the diesel pickup market be in 2007? Hard to tell. The new engines have power and torque, but are they a good value? And do they have the required reliability, durability with the new fuel and emissions standards? Probably. But Ford was smart to keep the 6.8L V10 available, and GM may regret dropping their well-respected (but slow selling) 8.1L V8 Big Block.
The HD Pickup Outlook
Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant has a capacity of some 380,000 vehicles per year - a big plant by any standard. And per unit profit must be huge. So it is Ford's plan to run that plant as close to capacity as possible.

Full-Size pickup sales were down in 2006 however, even heavy duty (over 8,500 # GVW) sales. It isn't yet clear if 2007 will see a recovery or not. In that most (say 80%) of Super Duty pickups are sold with a Diesel engine, the key is how well the new low sulfur fuel, the new exhaust emissions systems, the new diesel over gas price premium and the diesel fuel vs gasoline price premium are received in the market. My prediction is that sales will be slow for the first half of 2007, and pick up significantly in the second half.
GM will be a strong player in the 2007 CY HD pickup market with their new GMT 900 Silverado and Sierra. The Ford Super Duty program is strong also, so both should be able to hold or even increase segment share in 2007. Might be a tough year for the Dodge Boys.

2007 Detroit Auto Show: 2008 Cadillac CTS

The first generation CTS was a true breakthrough for Cadillac. Love it or hate it, the polarizing design proved that Cadillac had guts. Furthermore, it proved again that “middle of the road” is no place Cadillac wanted to be. CTS sales were brisk, and Cadillac was once again talked about in positive terms.

I remember my initial experience with the first generation CTS. It was clearly the most driver oriented Cadillac ever, but lacked a decent interior. $300 away from an interior that would make you feel like the car was worth the other $40,000 you spent on it. While many were drawn to the vehicle based on it’s exterior styling, AutoPacific research showed that the interior held the vehicle back from true success.

Interiors on Target
In January 2002 Anne Asensio was named Executive Director of Design, Interior Design, Quality and Brand Character, at General Motors Design. She began what is now seen as a very serious effort to improve the interiors of General Motors vehicles. Subsequent support from Bob Lutz hurried along GM’s efforts.
The results can be seen throughout General Motors products, and the 2008 CTS is an excellent example of this work. The CTS utilizes Cadillac’s “cut-and-sew” interior process that combines advanced technology with the hand-rendered craftsmanship. “Cut and sew” is term that is only carefully associated with mass production. Coverings for components such as the instrument panel, center console and door trim are cut, sewn and wrapped by hand. The same process was applied to Cadillac’s limited-production STS-V and XLR-V models, and the revised 2007 SRX. The effect is worth it. The 2008 CTS interior is beautiful, and works well with the updated exterior of the vehicle.
New 3.6L V-6 VVT, Six-Speed automatic
The CTS is powered by GM’s new 3.6L direct-injection V-6 VVT engine, delivering an estimated 300 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque with regular unleaded fuel. The 3.6L direct-injection engine will be the top-level engine option for the 2008 CTS, joining the existing 2.8L V-6 and 3.6L V-6. Direct-injection technology on the 3.6L VVT engine contributes to a 15-percent increase in horsepower; 8-percent increase in torque, and 3-percent improvement in fuel consumption. For the first time, the 2008 CTS will be available in both rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations. Additionally, the transmission lineup now consists only of six-speed units – a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic.
There is talk of wagon and crossover variants of the CTS, aiming this lineup directly at the BMW 3 series. Is the 2008 CTS this a true 3 series competitor? I’ll wait until I drive one for that commentary.

2007 Detroit Auto Show: 2007 Toyota Tundra
New Segment Leader?
Yes, I know... the Chevrolet Silverado is the Motor Trend Truck of the year for 2007. And 2007 Tundra sales will be far short of Silverado 1500 sales. But for my money the about-to-be-launched 2007 Tundra (which was not eligible for the MT award because it wasn't on sale January 1, 2007) may be the best 1/2 ton pickup on the market.

The all-new Tundra manufacturing launch is already underway, and public introduction is planned for February. What a truck! The original Toyota 1/2 ton, the T-100, was too small, underpowered, and overpriced. Not a success. The second effort, today's Tundra, was much better. A little smaller than the competition, a little less powerful than facing Ford, GM and Dodge entries, but nevertheless a high quality vehicle that sold well - about 125,000 units per year.

The 2007 Tundra is a no-holds-barred 1/2 ton pickup truck program. Right size, right power, appropriate style (exterior and interior), right feature availability, and competitive bodystyle and powertrain availability. Traditional Toyota reliability, durability and quality are expected. Prices are not yet announced, but assuming they are competitive, Toyota should be able to achieve their 200,000 units per year sales objective.

Cab Availability
There are three cabs. The Regular cab, which has segment leading room behind the seats. Then the Double Cab (with forward-hinged rear doors that don't have to be opened sequentially and power widows), and the CrewMax Cab, so large that it has a reclining rear seat.

Powertrain Avalability
Three engines are available: a 4.0L V6, a 4.7L V8, and the rompin', stompin' 5.7L 381 HP, 401 lb.ft super honker V8. Not the most powerful engine in a 1/2 ton pickup (the Dodge Ram SRT10 retains that crown with over 500 HP), but plenty of power for a real work truck - which the SRT10 is not. it should also be noted that the 5.7L Tundra comes, not with a 5-speed automatic, but with a 6-speed. Pretty impressive.
Features Galore
If you can name it, Tundra offers it. Satellite radio. Electronic navigation. Column shift or console shift. Power whatever. Toyota claims over 10,000 pounds of towing capacity (yes, I know, this can be little more than a liars contest, but impressive nevertheless).
Are 3/4 Ton and 1 Ton Models Coming?
For now the approved program is 1/2 ton only. My guess is that Toyota will establish success as a 1/2 ton player over the next couple of years, and only then seriously consider Heavy Duty line extensions. They will come...but maybe not for 4-5 years. And their diesel supplier is any body's guess. Mabe Hino ? Maybe Caterpillar? Who knows?

2007 Detroit Auto Show:2008 Chrysler Minivans
New and Improved
The Chrysler Group showed off their new 2008 Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country Minivans at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week. Actual vehicle introduction isn't until September 2007, however.

More Power
Powertrain improvements include a new, more powerful, 4.0L V6 engine coupled with a six-speed automatic transaxle - a first for the Minivan segment.
Restyled
While basically similar in terms of style and package, the new Minivans are, if anything, a little more biased towards package (less tumblehome, stiffer D-pillar) and less advanced in exterior appearance. Probably appropriate for a segment where swoopy styling is less important than functionality. Nissan tested the stylish Minivan segment with the Quest, and found it to be pretty small!

Low Demand Models Eliminated
No longer will Chrysler offer All-Wheel-Drive Minivans. Never was much demand. Couldn't have been much incrementality. Those prospects interested in more traction would probably be happier with an SUV or XSUV anyway. And the Short Wheelbase versions are also discontinued. Again, little or no loss. It is amazing how Chrysler invented the modern Minivan back in late1983 with a 100% SWB/4-cylinder product line. How times have changed!
New Interior Feature
Chrysler's "Stow'N Go" seating has been a real success. Now they will offer "Swivel 'N Go": swiveling seats with an available table for the kids to have lunch on or to play on. Might be some demand, we'll see.
Sales Prognosis
The Minivan market was down about 12% in 2006 vs 2005, but still almost 1,000,000 units per year. Some further decline can be expected as XSUV availablity and sales continue to increase.
How about Chrysler Minivan sales? I expect them to increase! Why? Because the 2008 product program is so strong? No. Rather because GM and Ford have announced that they are getting out of the Minivan business, and much of their volume may be captured by Chrysler. Once again, luck beats planning!

2007 Detroit Auto Show: 2008 Ford Super Duty
Major Change; Improved, but Not Yet Perfect
Ford showed an array of 2008 model year Super Duty Pickups at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week. This is a really important vehicle for Ford - both for sales/market share reasons and, more important yet, for profitability reasons.

The Exterior
The exterior appearance is enhanced. More masculine, but not overdone. Very appropriate. Give 'em an A.
ED: OK, give 'em an A, but I would have loved to have seen a bit more Super Chief in the new Super Duties. With the public gaga over the Super Chief, it would have been great if Ford could have pulled off more Super Chief styling cues.

The Interior
The interior appearance is significantly updated, and looks great - fully competitive with the all-new GMT 900 series Silverado and Sierra pickups from General Motors. Maybe an A-.
The Powertrain - New 6.4L Turbo Diesel
The powertrain news is all related to the new 6.4L V8 Turbo Diesel from International, which replaces the prior star-crossed 6.0L. More power (350 HP) more torque (650 lb.-ft.). Hopefully the early 6.0L reliability problems are behind us now. The diesel mix in the Super Duty is pretty high (about 85%) so this engine is really important.
Diesel engine pricing was not announced, but is rumored to be +$1,500 over 2007. That's to cover the increased cost of 2007 diesel exhaust emissions gear. The diesel vs a gas price differential which was about $5,300, will now be about $6,800. And diesel fuel is now selling for $0.40 per gallon over regular grade gas in many parts of the country, largely negating the better fuel economy of the diesel.
So, what will happen to diesel sales and mix this year? I don't know...that remains to be seen.

Line extension to F-450 pickup
Ford introduced the F-450 Pickup. That will help both sales and profits. While F-450 pickups were previously available on an aftermarket conversion basis, here comes Ford with a factory offering - a better truck at a lower cost. Well done Ford! With the move to ever larger and heavier RVs, boats and horse trailers, this is likely to be a profitable niche for Ford. Imagine, 24,000 pounds towing capacity - with brakes to match!

The new Super Duty also has an optional Tailgate Step. Clever! Maybe not the answer to a maiden's prayer, but one more feather in Ford's cap.
Super Cab - Room for Improvement
Carryover Super (Extended) Cab a Deficiency: One obvious compromise in the 2008 Super Duty program involves the Super (Extended) Cab. Essentially it is carryover. That means rear hinged rear doors that have to be opened sequentially, that only open 90 degrees (GM's access doors open a full 170 degrees), and contain windows that don't go down. Just not competitive in today's pickup market. I'd say those doors are worst in class, and may well hurt Extended Cab sales.
Why did Ford do that? What were they thinking? Well, my guess is they were thinking about engineering workload and manufacturing expenditures. Nothing is less costly than doing nothing. But the competition (Chevrolet, GMC, Dodge, even the 1/2 ton Titan and Tundra) have raced ahead. What can Ford do now? It's too late to fix the problem. Maybe customers won't know or care as much as I think they will. Let's hope so, for Ford's sake. And if it does cost sales, then some sort of bodystyle repricing strategy may be necessary to address the problem.

2007 Detroit Auto Show: Return of the Avenger
Revived Avenger Takes Charger Cues in Sheetmetal and Hobbies: Avenger Race Car Part of 2007 NASCAR Car of Tomorrow Program
At the 2006 Paris auto show, Dodge showed off an Avenger Concept. At the time, we offered up our first impressions of the new sedan (click here for our story). A mere four months later, Dodge revealed the production version at the 2007 North American International Auto Show. Avenger is important to the Dodge franchise and promises to be a far better competitor than the defunct Stratus was in its end days, but VehicleVoice readers will not be surprised that the Avenger name replaces Stratus, or that the production car is much like the concept, minus the concept's SRT-like bodywork.

Dodge also reinforced their commitment to motorsports with a Car of Tomorrow Avenger NASCAR also on stage. NASCAR driver Kurt Bush helped Dodge introduce the updated Viper, but Juan Pablo Montoya was on hand to help introduce the racing Avenger.

Dodge needs Avenger to play an important role in its car lineup, replacing the Stratus, which dropped after the 2006 model year. Despite initial comments about some confusion in its styling details, the Avenger is more successful at incorporating the Dodge family elements than the Sebring is for Chrysler, but that would not have been difficult. The two share nearly the same overall dimensions, but Avenger's Charger-inspired shoulders give the rear a more finished look than the truncated Sebring's short deck allows. Avenger's competition will include the Ford Fusion, Saturn Aura, and Chevrolet's all-new 2008 Malibu (also revealed this January in Detroit), as well as the older Mazda6 and the even less expensive Kia Optima. The mid-size sedan segment has historically been highly competitive, and the 2007/2008 model years are no easier. The Detroit reveal gives us the chance to bring you more details on the production car and its available equipment, but in February we'll have our first driving impressions.

Three Trim Levels, Three Engines
Avenger is on an all-new platform shared with the Chrysler Sebring, and it also gets the same powertrain and many of the same features. There will be a late-availability R/T AWD Avenger, and very likely optional all-wheel drive for the 2008 Sebring range, too. The Avenger will get the MyGig system being introduced on the Sebring and Dodge Nitro (click here for our MyGig discussion), a feature most Chrysler Group products will add as they get major updates.

As we discussed back in September with the concept reveal, Avenger will be offered with three powertrains in the States (173HP 2.4L DOHC 16v I4, 189HP 2.7L SOHC 12v flexible fuel V6, and a 235HP 3.5L DOHC 24v V6). The I4 and 2.7L V6 get four-speed automatic transmissions, while the 3.5L gets a six-speed automatic. The SE and SXT both get the 2.4L engine standard, but the SXT can be ordered with the 2.7L. The SXT gets more standard equipment for its higher $19,795 base price, including YES Essentials cloth, a fold-flat passenger seat, power brakes, seventeen-inch wheels, and an eight-way power driver's seat. The R/T ($23,545) steps up to the 3.5L V6, all-wheel-drive can be ordered, and it gets standard sport-tuned suspension, steering-wheel-mounted controls, six-disc CD radio, heated body-color folding mirrors, eighteen-inch wheels, fog lamps, rear spoiler, and chrome-tipped dual exhaust. The R/T's equipment list looks good, but even the base SE looks to be well equipped, with standard side airbags, tilt/telescope steering wheel, Chill Zone glovebox (from Caliber), and MP3-capable CD player.

2007 Detroit Auto Show: 2008 Dodge Magnum
Lose the Cartoon, Keep the Attitude
Three years ago, Dodge brought American muscle to a wagon at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. In the best Dodge fashion, the Magnum arrived with a tough, mean look; made no apologies for being either pure American muscle or for being a wagon; and we loved it, though its personality was never subtle or refined. Three years later, Dodge introduces a new face that adds sophistication without losing its edge. The changes for 2008 are minor in nature may not sound all that significant. But the result is a vehicle with some style and grace added to its edge.

Though sales don't begin until later in the year, an updated Magnum was but one of Dodge's reveals at the 2007 Detroit auto show. Magnum keeps its goodness, including the HEMI V8 with cylinder deactivation in the R/T and the grocery-getter/weekend racer in the 425HP SRT8, but trades in some of the cartoon aspects of its pumped-up look for a more sophisticated approach. There is a smoother, cleaner look for the standard cars and the dad-racer SRT8. The Magnum has grown up, while keeping its devilish personality.

Family Face Updated
New headlights and hood allow for a raised-eyebrow look similar to the Charger sedan and all-new Avenger, with creases in the hood also reminiscent of Charger, for the basic Magnum range. Combined with the subtly redesigned lower fascia, the changes allow for a less clumsy face. The new wider grille is every bit as aggressive as before. The new chrome accents below the headlights are just enough to brighten the face. The SRT8 also gets a new grille, redesigned hood, and front fascia. The new hood scoop on SRT8 is functional as well as adding to its take-no-prisoners look.
Redesigned Interior Continues Upscale March
The interior has been redesigned as well, with what Dodge calls a more driver-oriented layout. The chrome rings around the gauges are among the elements that give the interior a more upscale look, versus the overdone thick chrome rings they replaced. SRT8 models get the new ambient LED cupholder and door-map pocket lighting standard, while that new feature is optional for the rest of the range. The SRT8 now boasts a ReConfigurable Display in the cluster for getting instant feedback on just how fast you got around that autocross course, or maybe more likely, to the grocery store and back.

2007 Detroit Auto Show: 2008 Dodge Viper
Damn the Torpedoes!
What do you do to improve an icon like the Dodge Viper? More Power. How do you do it? Displacement. While not rocket science, the formula fits the vehicle (and the brand).
With all the subtlety of a jack hammer at a wedding, Dodge revealed in the 2008 Viper SRT-10 at Detroit’s Cobo Hall at the 2007 North American International Auto Show. After a rock and roll opening that included the 1964 Kinks hit “You Really Got Me”, the press was treated to “Even more venom” in the 2008 Viper.

Give Me MORE, Give Me MORE!
The visual changes could be easily overlooked, but the overall changes will entice the target buyer. AutoPacific's consumer research shows that “more power and acceleration” is a common desire for current Viper owners. In fact, of all vehicles in AutoPacific's research, Viper owners (100% of them) say they want more power and acceleration. That's not to say they don't already have enough. They just want MORE!
"Subtle" Engine Upgrades Get Viper to 600HP!
Working with McLaren Performance Technologies, SRT engineers used a basic formula for more power: bigger displacement, more efficient breathing and higher engine speed. The Viper SRT10’s V-10 aluminum engine block was revised raising the displacement to 8.4 liters from 8.3 liters. The Viper’s engine breathes through new cylinder heads, larger valves and Variable Valve Timing. The intake manifold is also designed for better air flow.
The Goodies
Here’s what only 2008 Viper owners will flaunt:
• A new 8.4-liter Viper SRT10 V-10 engine that produces 600 HP. Yep! 600!
• A new hood that features restyled, air extractors
• 0–60 mph in less than four seconds (Fire your chiropractor.)
• 0–100–0 mph in just over 12 seconds
• 60-0 braking in less than 100 feet
• New exterior and interior colors for increased customization options
Next stop on the “No Replacement for Displacement Tour” is the Chevrolet Corvette, which is rumored to have 650 horsepower. Stay tuned.
EDITOR's NOTE
If you have never had the chance to drive a Viper, try with all your might to finagle one. The original Viper re-acquainted me with TORQUE. You could easily slide the Viper around corners using the throttle and just twitches of the steering wheel. Remember, that was the one without real windows. It was the pure incarnation of Bob Lutz' skunk works inside Chrysler. The latest Viper is much more of a real car, uh, a car you can live with every day. Drive one. It'll change your brain.

2007 Detroit Auto Show: Hyundai Veracruz
Hyundai Marches on…
Instead of smoke, Ice Capades (Mercedes-Benz) or a TV chef (like Bobby Flay Chrysler used to introduce its "Bread and Butter" 2008 minivans), Hyundai chose a duet of classical guitars to open for the release of the 2007 Hyundai Veracruz. It seemed to fit the mood, as diversion from the real star would have been a mistake. The 2007 Hyundai Veracruz looks like a winner.
At AutoPacific we have a phrase that describes when the makers of a vehicle seem to have done their research well and worked hard to make sure that their vehicle was developed with the customer in mind. We call it “checking all the boxes”. The development of the Veracruz fits this description.
Listening to John Krafjic rattle off the features for this vehicle was like listening to a must have list for SUV purchasers:
• 3.8-liter V6, with 263 HP
• Six-speed automatic transmission
• All-wheel-drive
• Better highway MPG than a Honda Pilot
• More cargo volume than the full-size Mercedes-Benz GL
• Quieter inside than a Lexus RX 350
• A single-latch, simple-to-use 50/50 split fold-into-the-floor seat (I’ve been in the back. Tight but not a joke.)
• Optional 600 watt Stereo
• Standard XM satellite radio with 3 months of free access
• Five Star rating for front and side impact
• While pricing has not been announced, expect it to start under $30,000
After spending a few minutes in the Veracruz at the show, it’s pretty evident that Hyundai’s target is clearly upward. Like the Azera, Veracruz pushes further towards the likes of Toyota, and even Lexus. Nice material selection, good fit and pleasant styling that will likely still look good after the payment coupon is empty.
When we reported on the Azera, the question arose about it's competitive set. "Is this Hyundai a true luxury vehicle?" While both the Azera and the Veracruz lack a true luxury brand and dealership network, it's safe to say that both vehicles are pushing into the luxury segment. Some comparisons to MDX and RX350 are fair. In addition, Hyundai has made tremendous advances in vehicle satisfaction and quality. If the Veracruz continues in this direction, we can expect Hyundai's US sales to continue their ascent.

2007 Detroit Auto Show: QX56 Goes to Doctor 90210
My family is sort of schizophrenic when it comes to vehicles. Among others, our garage includes a MINI Cooper S and a Ford Expedition. As the primary driver of the Cooper, you can easily guess how I feel about the Expedition. While I sometimes appreciate it’s utility, vehicles this big should be used for hauling vegetables, not people. When I drive it, I often gaze in wonder at its expanse of empty seats, ready to reduce my passenger miles per gallon. Yet I understand that I am clearly (still) in the minority. The US has a lot of full size SUVs with happy drivers on the road.
…Of course I’m excited about the assignment of covering the 2008 refresh of the gargantuan QX56 for VehicleVoice.
Without making an SUV as big as the now-defunct Ford Excursion, Infiniti’s designers gave the original QX56 design cues that make it appear almost as huge. The front grille seems to boast about its lack of aerodynamics. In profile, the carryover roof still appears to be breaking at its mid-point. I can gladly tell the masses that the 2008 Infiniti QX56 has retained its character. More importantly, it has improved.
The exterior changes to the new QX include new front and rear fascias, new front fog lamps, new roof rack, and standard 20-inch chromed aluminum-alloy wheels. The overall effect is that of lightening the vehicle.
Infiniti is clearly spending more time (and money) on vehicle interiors. The QX’s interior contains by a new instrument panel cluster with electroluminescent instrumentation, and a wood grain interior trim. The 4WD model gets a heated steering wheel. Convenience is improved with a new 3rd-row power folding seat.

If capacity is your need, and comfort is your desire, the QX56 delivers.
The new QX goes on sale at Infiniti retailers nationwide in April.

NEW MINI Cooper - Mechanically New Old Friend

Disclaimer, the author drives a 2004 MINI Cooper S. All commentary from this article should be viewed as suspect, coming from a mindless MINI disciple. Treat all materials henceforth as suspect, and possibly void of objectivity.
Whew! I dodged a bullet! Driving a car with a tendency towards trendiness is hard enough. Driving a vehicle that was trendy would be unbearable! Fortunately, no one will know the difference.
Penny pinchers who worry that their current MINI may start to depreciate with the launch of the 2008 model have little to worry about. The 2008 MINI looks remarkably similar to the one now on the road. The overall length of the MINI Cooper has been extended by 2.36 inches, while the new MINI Cooper S is 2.4 inches longer. The modest increase in size is due to the MINI's new, larger engines and new European pedestrian safety rules.
While thematically unchanged, the interior has a new design, which is unmistakably MINI. The highlight of the dashboard remains the larger center speedometer, which now features audio controls as well. New MINIness includes optional ambient interior illumination which may be varied between warm orange and a cool blue, according to the individual preferences of the driver and passengers.
Chrysler Engines from Brazil Are Gone
Also gone are the Chrysler-derived, Brazilian-built engines, replaced by new engines developed in cooperation with PSA-Citroen. Power remains modest at an estimated 118 hp (Cooper) and 172 (Cooper S). 0-60 times are 8.5 and 6.7 seconds respectively. The Cooper S changes from supercharged to turbocharged. Unpopular in the past at BMW, turbocharging seems to be the new mantra in Munich.
Gimme My Clubman
B-segmenters (Is there such a group?) are anxiously awaiting the MINI Traveller (or Clubman), which will be about eight inches longer than the MINI Cooper. The Traveller will sport a split rear door hinged at the sides, as well as a pair of rear side suicide doors.
Watch for the Detroit Auto Show interview of Gert Hildebrand, chief designer for Mini. It will post during the week of January 15th.

2007 Detroit Auto Show: Chevy Camaro Convertible Delivers
Sign me up. This vehicle has what it takes to woo more than one customer to the brand. Imagine … a Chevrolet Car (other than the Corvette) that doesn’t require you to create an excuse for your friends and neighbors.
Originally introduced in September 1966 as a competitor to the Ford Mustang, the original Camaro soldiered successfully through four generations before it’s timely demise in 2002. By that time it have evolved into everything that was wrong with General Motors. While some decried its death, pointing to the continuation of the Ford Mustang, the vehicle had become a dinosaur. In retrospect, its complete disappearance may have been necessary to clear the decks for the creation of the modern Camaro.
In August, GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner announced that GM would build the all-new Camaro based on the concept that debuted at the 2006 Detroit auto show. Rear wheel drive, independent rear suspension, a muscular 400 hp LS2 V8, and a six-speed manual transmission gave the concept the most passion at last year's 2006 Detroit show.
Sales of the Coupe are expected during the first quarter of 2009. The convertible will follow later in the year.
The convertible concept is beautifully executed. Modern, but hanging on to enough cues to remind me of carpooling to high school in the late 70s. Design details include:
LED tail lamps
Rear spoiler with LED-lit CHMSL
Racing-inspired fuel filler door (A bit cliché, but cool)
Front-inlet hood scoop, inspired by the Corvette Z06
Heritage-inspired rear fender "gills"
Anodized aluminum door handles (no plastic, PLEASE)
21-inch (front) and 22-inch (rear) wheels
Let’s hope that these vehicles get here soon.
For more info visit: http://www.gm.com/
EDITOR'S NOTE:
Yeah, yeah, yeah, many of us will lust after the next generation Camaro, but it is still old-school with regards to its ragtop. Even Pontiac G6 gets a retractable hardtop. Any production ready convertible introduced after 2006 should have a retractable hardtop.
Raise your hands, who has NOT owned a Pony Car at some point? I can attest to a 1969 Boss 302 Mustang. Also, a 1979 Mustang Indianapolis Pace Car. We presently have a 1999 Firebird Trans Am in the office. Of course, the daily driver is a 2005 Ford Explorer. So Pony Cars are near and dear to our hearts.
The last generation Camaro/Firebird had fallen victim to GM's packaging gremlins. While the cars were great to look at, you were victim to the very, very fast A-Pillar, sitting on the ground and the cargo area was so shallow that almost nothing could be carried in the load area. At the same time, Mustang remained arguably stodgier, but more useful. Mustang could carry a plant, Camaro/Firebird could not.

2007 Detroit Auto Show: 2008 Ford Focus
Ford's Commitment to Small Cars
At the 2007 North American International Auto Show, the 2008 Focus was among Ford's reveals. After Alan Mullaly introduced the Five Hundred's freshening, Mark Fields was on hand to talk about the Focus. Fields said the Focus proves their ongoing commitment to small cars, but we weren't quite convinced of the enthusiasm behind the tagline. Ford's real commitment to small cars in particular will be evidenced later in the decade, when a smaller entry is introduced. We do see a stronger commitment to maintaining their product line overall with this Focus update, as too often Ford has introduced models and left them to languish later in their lifecycles. The Focus last had a major change for the 2005 model year, and is due for a freshening. It does support Ford's claim of understanding that any Way Forward will require constant attention to their product lineup.

Focus Now has Two Bodystyles Rather Than Four - Hatchbacks and Wagon Gone
With this generation, Ford launches Focus with a two-door coupe and four-door sedan, skipping the wagon and five-door hatchback. Missing, or some might simply say re-interpreted, is the three-bar grille. Focus instead has two bars and very cat-eye headlamps. This Focus, however, is a rework of the current platform, not an all-new vehicle. Apparently, we'll have to wait until the all-new vehicle arrives for Focus to be fully integrated to the new family style. In the meantime, the 2008 Focus suffers with one of the least attractive new Ford faces in the line.

Inside, it is a better story. Improvements there make for a better-looking interior with better materials. As the interior is where drivers spend most of their time, improvements there could help overcome the less attractive face. The climate control system is updated as well, with quieter and more efficient operation. The 2008 Focus gets many of the airbag systems Ford first introduced for SUVs, including the Safety Canopy side air curtain system.

Aside from styling, the suspension and chassis were revised for quieter ride and better body stiffness, as well as reduced weight. The Focus continues with a 2.0L DOHC 16v I4, available in flexible fuel form as the 2.0E, mated to a standard five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic transmission.
New Technology
Focus is one of the twelve vehicles to debut with the Ford Sync option this year, which uses software developed by Microsoft to allow voice operation of cell phones, including the ability to access the phone book and read back text messages, as well as a variety of digital music players or music stored on an portable drive. One of the more important aspects of Sync is that it is designed to be upgradable, and therefore can keep up with the dizzying pace of new cell phones and MP3 players. The system does not include a hard drive for storing music.

Interior lighting is also a new playground for manufacturers, who are incorporating LEDs across their ranges for softer ambient lighting. In the case of the Focus, there are seven lighting colors to choose from that illuminate areas including cupholders and footwells. This approach to lighting makes a car's interior a more pleasant place to be at night for driver and passengers, without being bright enough to distract oncoming traffic. Focus's center stack, HVAC, and audio controls are also all revised for easier use as well as more attractive design.

2007 Detroit Auto Show: Five Hundred Gets More Power and a New Look
2008 Facelift Addresses Power and Style Criticisms
When Ford introduced the Five Hundred for the 2005 model year, its package was praised but its 203HP V6 and bland styling took a lot of heat, and sales were not as robust as Ford was hoping. The facelift revealed by Ford's newest executive, Alan Mullaly, at the 2007 North American International Auto Show, on sale in summer 2007, addresses both issues.

There is a far more impressive and substantial face to the new Five Hundred. The most notable change is Ford's family three-bar grille, and perhaps the least important is the addition of side vents, some variation of which is popping up on nearly everything these days. There is a new sculpted hood and front fascia. Side-view mirrors are smaller, but offer improved visibility and reduced wind noise. The Limited adds more chrome, including on the side vents, door handles, and mirror caps. Oddly, the revised mirror does not add turn-signal indicators, a feature customers seem to appreciate and one that is becoming more and more common. In the rear, the taillamps and fascia are revised. Interior changes focused on a quieter ride, with a revised sound package. Ride is improved with revised shock towers, new dampers and springs front and rear, and a revised and retuned rear suspension.

New features include the Ford Sync option, developed by Microsoft and Ford. It allows users to integrate digital music players and cell phones to the car. Though Sync includes a USB port for playing music, it does not include a hard drive. Sync allows voice control of cell phones and music players, and can access cell phone books and read back text messages received on the phone. Five Hundred for 2008 also can be ordered with voice-activated navigation and in-car DVD entertainment.
The Five Hundred also gets Ford's new 3.5L V6, delivering 260HP in this application, and a change that may be more appreciated by Five Hundred buyers than the exterior updates. This is the V6 first seen in the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX and MXZ. The CVT is dropped with the 2008MY change, leaving only the six-speed automatic for both front- and all-wheel-drive models.

2007 Detroit Auto Show: Rolls-Royce Phantom Drops Its Head
At the 2004 Geneva auto show, Rolls-Royce showed off a 100EX concept. This January, the production version gets a Detroit reveal at the 2007 North American International Auto Show, and Rolls-Royce returns to the convertible market. The Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe goes into production in summer 2007 at the Goodwood, U.K., facility building the Phantom regular and long-wheelbase sedans. While final specifications are not yet confirmed, Rolls-Royce has been kind enough to release photos and initial information ahead of the formal press conference.

This two-door, four-passenger, truly luxurious convertible uses a version of the Phantom's aluminum spaceframe chassis and its 6.8L DOHC 48v V12 engine., though Rolls counts 1300 new parts for the droptop. As big as this luxury cabriolet is, a 0-to-60-mph time of 5.7 seconds is promised. Rolls-Royce calls the Phantom Drophead Coupe a less formal interpretation of classic Rolls-Royce design, but it still offers a commanding presence and truly Rolls-Royce personality. Compared with the standard wheelbase Phantom, the Drophead Coupe carries a nearly $70,000 price premium at $407,000 versus $333,350 for the base Phantom sedan. (The extended wheelbase Phantom carries a $395,000 price tag.)

The Phantom sedan offers ultra-luxury options such as a chiller and drinks cabinet for the center console, but every Phantom is basically made to order. The sedan's standard equipment list includes the finest leather surfaces, cashmere trim, and fitted cabinetry, and this level of luxury translates to the convertible as well. The convertible adds brushed steel and chrome to the leather and wood expected from an interior of this caliber.

Like the 100EX concept, the convertible has coach-style, front-opening doors and the teak decking covering the convertible top. These make access to the rear seats easier as well as helping improve overall body stiffness. The trunk offers a split tail, with a lower tailgate providing seats for a two-person picnic. The roof is a five-layer softtop, something becoming a rarity in these days of retractable hardtops, folds into a small enough space that it does not impede luggage space up or down, and is lined with cashmere. The convertible also gets the concept's brushed steel, machine finished and hand polished, hood and A-pillar. The brushed steel adds a dramatic flair to the design as well as helping improve the overall body structure.

2007 Detroit Auto Show: Chevrolet Gives New Malibu Style and Refinement
The official reveal of the new Malibu is a few days away at the 2007 North American International Auto Show, but GM has released first pictures and details. The 2008 Chevrolet Malibu sedan looks to be a solid step forward from the current car, though a five-door Maxx model is not part of the new range. The new look of Malibu ushers in Chevy's latest family look, but owners will most appreciate the powertrain and interior updates.
VehicleVoice and AutoPacific staffers believe that the new Malibu may be one of the most significant new launches of 2008.
EDITOR'S NOTE - Counterpoint - 2008 Malibu Finally Gives Credit to Chevy Buyers
To be perfectly honest, the 2004 to 2007 Malibu is a homely piece of work. Its dull styling guaranteed that its primary buyers would be fleets looking for the lowest common denominator, cheapest vehicle. While the sedan was homely, the 5-door was ghastly. Good concept based on the European Opel/Vauxhall Signum, Maxx (and Malibu) could have had very appropriate European styling, but for some reason GM's American management gave American buyers very little credit for taste. Hence the old Malibu and Maxx were designed for the lowest common denominator buyer. The 2008 Malibu promises to change the game.

Back in 2003 (2004 model year), Chevrolet moved the Malibu to the Epsilon platform and added the longer-wheelbase Maxx five-door hatchback. Chevrolet sold roughly twice as many sedans as five-doors, and the Maxx's odd shape wasn't well accepted by critics. The 2008MY sedan gets the same 112.3-inch wheelbase the hatchback had used, also the same as platform-mates Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura. This platform is referred to as Epsilon 2 and is a significant enhancement of that under the 2004-2007MY Malibu.

New Engines Promise Stronger Performance
Dropping the OHV V6 and updating the base I4 will give the model stronger performance at all trim levels and a more refined optional engine. Instead of a 144HP 2.2L I4, all levels of Malibu will be standard with a 164HP 2.4L DOHC 16v I4. The 252HP 3.6L DOHC 24v V6 is optional for LT and LTZ models. When the I4 is fitted in the LS and LT, it gets a four-speed automatic transmission. But in the LTZ, it gets the V6's six-speed automatic transmission. The six-speed gets a self-shift feature and steering-wheel-mounted controls.

The new powertrain options give Malibu a performance and refinement boost. The 164HP I4 and 252HP V6 give Malibu performance numbers they can brag about. For 2007MY, Malibu offered a 240HP SS model and a 217HP V6, but the 3.6L V6 is more refined and efficient as well as more powerful and Chevy expects the I4 to continue to be part of their 30-mpg-highway-or-better club.

Interior Goes Upscale
GM of late has significantly improved its interiors, and these changes are getting into the hands of consumers in new 2007MY and 2008MY products. Malibu is no exception. It will be offered with four interior color schemes, including three two-tone options and one all ebony. Some interiors get wood trim, others chrome accents. The two-tone setup provides even the base interior a stylish atmosphere. The top LTZ model gets a specific instrument layout, black chrome accents, and two-tone leather seats. As is becoming an industry trend, ambient lighting gives a more inviting interior, including overhead console LED floodlights. The LED overhead lights in particular will make for a nicer environment for nighttime driving, emitting a soft light into the cabin to make it more comfortable. Like the Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura, Malibu will offer the four-panel panoramic sunroof.
Another EDITOR'S NOTE - Interior a Strong Point
Based on previous reviews of the new Malibu interior, the interior now becomes a benefit rather than a detriment. Finally, General Motors is recognizing the value of an upscale interior even in its mainstream sedans and Malibu, like the Saturn Aura, moves into a position where it can challenge the Ford Fusion in interior execution.

In the safety department, there will be a full complement of standard airbags, four-wheel disc brakes and ABS, and traction control. StabiliTrak will be standard for LT and LTZ models. StabiliTrak is also now enhanced with an emergency braking assist, something GM is a little slow in adding.

Malibu Should Hold its Own
The mid-size sedan market is highly competitive, as is the industry as a whole. Chevy will take on the Ford Fusion, Dodge Avenger, Mazda 6, Kia Optima, Subaru Legacy, and Volkswagen Jetta. Many of these entries are fresh or all new, but Chevy looks to have updated Malibu in all the right areas. Improving interior and powertrain are the areas customers notice first and longest. Malibu's styling updates freshen the vehicle and enhance its Chevrolet personality with a bold face and stylish profile.
Lost Maxx
We wonder, though, about the loss of the Malibu Maxx. Chevy sold half as many hatchbacks as sedans, but over the years it was available that still meant 60,000 buyers in 2004, nearly 69,000 in 2005, and about 51,000 in 2006 (sedan sales fell by a similar number in 2006). So why did GM decide the Maxx was a failure?

GM doesn't have money to burn and needs to be careful on new-product investment, but walking away from a product that more than 50,000 Chevy customers took home annually only leaves a gap for others to fill. Losing the five-door will not cost Malibu all 50,000 annual potential Maxx buyers, but it will mean lower volumes for the Malibu nameplate and means that Chevy will have to work harder to keep those buyers in the showroom.

2007 Detroit Auto Show: Porsche Cayenne Has A New Face for the New Year
2008 Porsche Cayenne Revealed in Detroit
Among the many introductions expected at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit next week is that of an updated Porsche Cayenne. The first real sports-car-meets-SUV gets new engines to go with minor styling changes that improve aerodynamic efficiency. The new Cayenne arrives in U.S. dealers in March 2007 for the 2008 model year. I, for one, am looking forward to driving these new, sleeker, more powerful versions of the Cayenne. While it's been several years since I've been behind the wheel of one, it took only one afternoon driving the Cayenne S and Turbo for me to appreciate the impulse that could lead to buying a $90,000 SUV. Adding horsepower and beefing up the available features list should make for an even nicer product.

Even with these changes, Cayenne is not likely to see its peak sales year again. Back in 2004, Porsche sold just over 18,000 Cayennes. Since then, sales have settled in the low teens. Though sales around 12,000 units annually is perhaps not so bad for a high-priced, niche vehicle, this facelift will do more to hold volumes than to increase Cayenne's overall sales.

The new engines are the most interesting elements of this change, as exterior tweaks don't go beyond new headlights, more heavily contoured wheel arches, a new diffuser-style apron and roof spoiler, and revised front air intakes. The new intakes improve air cooling and engine efficiency, of course. The air intakes are still different for each model and the new headlights are a smoother. These changes give each version of the Cayenne a better-integrated and less clumsy look between headlights and front fascia. Changes to the rear are more subtle, but the new taillamps and bigger rear spoiler make for a more purposeful look. For comparison, here are a couple of photos of the first Cayenne.

All three models, Cayenne, Cayenne S, and Cayenne Turbo, get more power and efficiency thanks to direct injection engines. Porsche's European press material estimates as much as 15 percent fuel savings in real-world driving. While Porsche's North American arm is holding U.S. specifications for the show itself, they will be similar to the European versions.
The base Cayenne gets a much-needed power boost, going to a 3.6L DOHC 24v direct-injection V6 that will deliver about 290HP, versus the prior 247HP 3.2L V6 offered. The S gets a similar power boost, from 340HP from the original 4.5L V8 to about 385HP from the new direct-injection 4.8L V8. Adding twin turbos to that 4.8L takes the Cayenne Turbo to an even 500HP, up from the first Turbo's 450HP.

Other new features are adaptive headlights, standard on the Turbo and optional on the other models, and Porsche's Dynamic Chassis Control system. The PDCC roll stabilizer system, an option for all Cayenne models, reduces body roll during cornering for improved handling and agility, better directional stability, and improved ride comfort. Off road, a situation most Cayennes never see, axle articulation is increased for better traction.
