Cars & Coffee - March 24, 2007
The weekly Cars & Coffee meet at Ford's Premier Automotive Group Headquarters in Irvine always brings a potpourri of interesting cars. From oldsters to the most recent exotics, Cars & Coffee is an egalitarian event showcasing interesting cars from all eras. As often as possible - or when we get up early enough - AutoPacific and VehicleVoice staffers attend Cars & Coffee.
This week, a lineup of Chrysler 300s, Dodge Chargers and Dodge Magnums rolled into the event and dominated more than a row of show space.

Chrysler LX Lineup Took Over a Row
The Chrysler 300s rumbled in and ranged from stock to heavily modified. Some of the modifications were very well done and probably should be considered for production. Others were overdone... showing a lack of sophistication and taste. They took over more than a row of the show space and attracted interest from both older and younger spectators.

Bentley vs. Maybach - Which Would You Take?
This probably is one the few Maybachs that may be privately owned. What hotel would have a license plate "WHEEEE"? Of course, ridiculous to sublime. Is the Bentley the ridiculous car or the Maybach?

Line of Classic Mercedes Sandwiched Between Ferraris
There were a fair amount of Ferraris, a couple of Astons, a Callaway S7, several Ford GTs and even this line of classic Mercedes roadsters at today's Cars & Coffee. While the current exotics got a tremendous amount

Golden Retriever Woodie Combination
The Golden Retriever in the backseat of this great looking Woodie considered everybody a friend. What a great combo - Golden and a pristine Woodie. Don't even think about the dog hair.

Made Me Remember My 1969 Boss 302 Mustang
This new Saleen Mustang is the Parnelli Jones edition... costs a bit over $60,000. Painted Grabber orange just like Parnelli's Trans Am Mustangs of the late '60s and early '70s, this car made me lust after a new one. (The 1969 was notoriously unreliable... had fragile piston skirts and valve train offset by a 50,000 mile powertrain warranty). The backlite louvers reminded me of what a bitch it was to get the snow out of the louvers when the car was parked back to the wind. No rear window defroster. Snow caked under and between the louvers. Frostbitten hands.

Lovingly Restored 1967 Ford F250 Ranger Camper Special
My personal favorite was this 1967 Ford F250 Ranger Camper Special. Lovingly restored, the Camper Special had been taken apart piece-by-piece and brought back to better than new condition. Having been the "chief heater hose engineer" on Ford Trucks as an engineering grad trainee, I appreciated the attention to detail even in routing the hoses under the hood. Wow, nice job. Note, the truck has an auxiliary fuel tank.

XM Radio and Sirius to Merge into One Satellite Company
On Monday, February 19, 2007 XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio made the long expected announcement that they were merging. While this is not yet a done deal because of potential regulatory hurdles it is good news for folks who have become addicted to satellite radio.

In the Future - No Decision Needed Between XM/Sirius
The biggest benefit we can see is that you will be able to buy any car and have the "right" satellite service in the car. For example, having been an XM Radio subscriber for two years I switched from my XM equipped Infiniti and leased a Volvo XC90. Volvo, being part of Ford, has an exclusive agreement with Sirius. So, even if Volvo had been offering a satellite radio installation in the XC90 (which in 2006 they were not! Dark ages!), I would have been forced to get Sirius.
What did I do? Well, XM offered me a Delphi Roadie at a ridiculously low price and it has been crudely mounted in the Volvo since then. Poor and spotty reception, but at least I have satellite.
Merger Recognizes Competition from Many Fronts
This merger is recognition that there is not room for two satellite radio providers in the USA. The subscriber base for XM and Sirius combined is under 15,000,000. Of course, for companies that began offering service just a few years ago, this may not be too bad but it's not good enough for sustainable growth. Satellite radio is duking it out with iPod integration in cars, in-vehicle hard drives, high definition radio, traditional AM/FM. Competition is fierce and this merger will help satellite radio survive.
If you are a subscriber to XM Radio, you received this email on Tuesday, February 20, 2007:
Dear XM Radio Subscriber:
We want to share with you some exciting news: Yesterday, in Washington DC, we announced XM Radio will be merging with Sirius Satellite Radio to form the premier digital audio service.
The merger will create a satellite radio company that will provide consumers across the country with more and better premium radio programming. The combined company will be able to compete better in what has become a very complex and dynamic entertainment market.
Where today our exclusive contracts mean you had to choose between baseball and football or Oprah and Martha Stewart, the new company will seek to ensure that in the future, you will be able to access both companies' programming. And, once we are fully integrated, those of you who have factory-installed satellite radio will no longer be limited to the programming provided by the exclusive satellite radio service chosen by their car manufacturer.
This merger should be completed in late 2007 or early in 2008. Throughout the year, we will provide updates on how the merger is progressing and information will be available at our website, www.xmradio.com.
Between today and the merger date, as well as during the period immediately after the merger date, all of your services will remain the same. The channel lineup, the customer service number, the great music technology, and the XM Radio web site will all remain unchanged and there will be no disruption to service. But, if you have questions, information will be available and maintained on our website, and you can contact our Listener Care team at 800-XMRADIO, with questions and concerns.
XM Radio continues to be committed to providing you the highest quality audio entertainment and customer service available today. After the merger, our new company will be able to offer you the most exciting listening experience in radio.
Sincerely,
Hugh Panero
CEO, XM Satellite Radio

SUVs are NOT Dead
SUVs are NOT DEAD - Sport Utility Vehicles Remain Top Considered Vehicle Segment
For as long as I can remember, the New York Times and eastern media have been taking SUVs to task. While many of the people writing these stories don't own a vehicle or even drive a car or truck, they have decided that the Sport Utility Vehicle is the poster child for social irresponsibility. No matter what they say, folks continue to gravitate to SUVs. We have the data.
For the past thirteen years, Sport Utility Vehicles have been the product segment that is most considered by American driving public. 2006 was a traumatic year for SUVs. High fuel prices dampened demand for large truck-based SUVs, but in 2006 as for more than a decade, demand for SUVs was highest among AutoPacific’s seven macro product segments. When consideration for contemporary SUVs – Crossover Sport Utility Vehicles or XSUVs – is included, consideration goes even higher.

Clearly America’s love affair for this Swiss Army Knife of vehicles has not waned, nor has demand by Americans for a vehicle type that can do many different things. We used to say that people bought SUVs because they can go anywhere, go anytime, go with anything, go with anybody… an SUV could do it all. Meeting these criteria – especially the go anywhere aspect of the equation yielded SUVs that were too capable. They could go off-road over rough terrain through tough climate conditions. Even though most buyers never used them for what they were capable of, they were designed to have off-road credibility.
Let it be XSUV: Let's officially coin our term for Crossover SUVs. These are not simply "crossovers", after all, you could have a crossover of almost any two products. We don't want to call them CUVs - Crossover Utility Vehicles - because that dilutes what they really are supposed to be. The right term is Crossover SUV. This clearly defines that this is an SUV based on a car platform - something not quite as capable as body-on-frame traditional SUVs. So, for now on, it's XSUVs.

Carmakers Responded to Buyers with Crossover SUVs: By the end of the ‘90s, manufacturers began to respond to buyers’ demand for slightly softer product characteristics. For awhile terms like “soft-roaders”, “cute-utes” were used to describe vehicles like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and even the Lexus RX300. Inside the car companies engineers and designers were referring to these types of vehicles as Crossovers. And while the buyer rarely refers to his Ford Escape, Chevrolet Equinox, or Honda Pilot as a Crossover SUV, that is what they are. They are not designed for off-roading, but they are designed to provide comfortable, maneuverable, efficient transportation in the suburbs and on vacation.
VehicleVoice internet survey panel members and respondents to AutoPacific's annual Future Vehicle Survey have responded about what type of transportation they will consider next time they buy. Selected details are below the fold.
The results of AutoPacific’s 2006 Future Segment Consideration Study show the strength of SUVs not only today but continuing into the future.
Half of Vehicle Buyers Will Consider an SUV: Over 50% (51%) of all buyers will consider an SUV or XSUV next time they buy. This purchase may be to replace their present vehicle or another in their familiy fleet. Their next purchase may even be an addition to the family fleet. Three segments are tightly grouped behind XUVs/XSUVs in consideration: Pickup Trucks (38%), Luxury Cars (36%), Mid-Size Cars (36%). Sports/Sporty Cars will be considered by 20% with Compact Cars and Minivans each considered by 10%. These results add to more than 100% because respondents to AutoPacific’s research could select more than one segment they would consider in the future.

For Boomers and Younger, SUVs/XSUVs are Top Considered Segment. About 65% of the under 30 years of age group will consider an SUV/XSUV. This increases to 69% among thirty year olds before dropping to 58% for folks in their 40s, 50% for those in their 50s and 34% for those 65 years of age or more. For the oldest age category, Luxury Cars are the vehicle of choice. For every age category except for the very oldest, SUV/XSUVs are the top ranked category.
Women Most Strongly Consider SUVs: Not surprisingly SUVs and Crossover SUVs are most strongly considered by WOMEN! SUVs are clearly the day-to-day workhorse of the suburban set.
SUV/XSUV Consideration Consistent Across the Country: SUV consideration is constant across every major geographic region of the United States. It is truly an American icon. Unlike other vehicle types, such as Pickup Trucks that have highest consideration in the Mountain States and lowest in the Northeast, about half of the buyers in each region from coast-to-coast and border-to-border will consider an SUV next time they buy. Luxury Cars, by the way, are most strongly considered in California.

2007 Detroit Auto Show - Hunan University New Concept Car
Ah, those crazy Chinese. We all know that the Chinese are poised to enter the USA market sometime in the future. Most of the vehicles will be very conventional. You might say that many will be ripoffs of vehicles sold in Western markets around the globe. Anyway, Changfeng Motor had a display at the 2007 North American International Auto Show. While Changfeng featured their Liebao ("cheetah" in English) Motors entries, they also devoted some valuable space in their booth to this concept vehicle developed by Hunan University.
VehicleVoice and AutoPacific staffers ventured down into Detroit's Cobo Hall basement where Changfeng had its display in Michigan Hall.

We're not sure what the Hunan University New Concept Car is supposed to be, but, yes, it does have a single wheel in front and a single wheel at the rear. There are two wheels at the center of the car. I guess this is really a "new concept" in vehicle architecture. We are seeing several folks looking at three-wheeled vehicles, but never one with a leading wheel and dragging wheel.
Any idea what it will achieve?

2007 Detroit Auto Show: Subaru Legacy Update
AutoPacific analysts and Vehicle Voice contributors were on hand in Detroit to take in the subtle changes Subaru plans for the 2008 model year Legacy and Outback. Last year our office had the opportunity to drive a Subaru Legacy Spec B where we realized that much of what we believed about Subaru products have now become misconceptions . My previous encounters had been with older Subarus and I was never really impressed. Throughout college I can always remember drawing a correlation between Subarus and pipe-smoking geography professors who wore hats and corduroy sports coats with leather elbow patches, liked camping and had plans to retire in Oregon or Colorado.

Engineering wins out over Bean Counting
The understated Legacy sedan is more of an enthusiast's car than it appears to be. Yes, the exterior styling may be dull, maybe even boring but that could be part of their appeal. Subaru is owned by Fuji Heavy Industries in Japan which was formerly known as Nakajima; a prominent aircraft manufacturer. With this aircraft-oriented engineering background Subaru takes pride in pursuing better design solutions and baking them into their automobiles.
Some may say that the engineers at Subaru win out over the bean counters. For instance, a horizontally opposed engine may be more expensive to produce when compared to an inline or V engine but it will be better balanced (smoother) and does relate more so to an aeronautical background. Subarus have frameless windows which may not be cost efficient either, requiring additional rubber moldings and felt, but some would conclude that frameless windows are better styled. All Subarus currently sold in the USA have symmetrical all-wheel-drive. Again, not a least cost approach, but a system that sets Subaru apart from the competition while improving not simply performance and handling but safety as well.

Swallowing an H-6
The Detroit Auto Show revealed little changes to their flagship sedan. Since 2006 was such a great year for Subaru they have taken a very conservative approach with minimal changes to both exterior and interior. The changes are more evolutionary rather than revolutionary.
Subaru will offer a horizontally opposed, normally aspirated, six cylinder (pried out of the B9 Tribeca) along with the Legacy's traditional intercooled, turbocharged boxer 4. After swallowing an H-6 the Legacy can also be force-fed gears. Fans of automatic transmissions will now have the opportunity to communicate which gear their Legacy should be in from paddles located on the steering column.

The SI-Drive can still be found on the Legacy and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System is now standard on all Legacys. The all new (2007MY) Legacy 3.0 R will take its place above the 2.5 GT Spec B in Subarus quiver of quick, understated all-wheel-drive sedans. Even though the turbo charged H-4 (243hp) puts out all but two horsepower of the normally aspirated H-6 (245hp). One question that may arise is longevity. Traditionally, normally aspirated engines live longer than turbocharged engines. Subaru definitely wants to play with other manufacturers producing all-wheel-drive four door sedans such as Audi. The addition of an H-6 to the Legacy line up will probably help.

2007 Detroit Auto Show: Kia Soul Confirmed
Kia's Lineup Expands for 2009
Kia's display concept at the 2007 North American International Auto Show was a concept called the Kue, but their announcement about last year's concept is bigger news. At the 2006 North American International Auto Show, Kia showed a four-door SUV called Soul. This year, Kia announced that the Soul will be built in Korea and imported for U.S. sales. No specifics were given, other than the plan to have it in dealers sometime during 2008 (2009 model year).

Does Kia have room for three SUVs? It may seem illogical to need SUVs on top of SUVs, but Soul could be to the Sportage what Ford's Edge is to their Escape. With more SUV look than substance, this entry could have the cargo/people hauling advantages of a box but reduce the fuel-cost disadvantage.

Many of the concept's more outrageous elements, like the fold-out laptop computer, aren't likely for production, but a 2.0L four-cylinder engine and a front-drive-base are good bets, as is optional AWD. Bluetooth, advanced ambient lighting, power liftgate, and an advanced audio system with auxiliary inputs are some features that might make the transition. Cost is a bigger deterrent for those features than technology or engineering. Kia claimed the concept Soul's rear-hinged second door setup met safety standards, but we're skeptical about the likelihood of anything but traditional, forward-hinged doors in real life. (For more about concept Soul's features and images, click to our 2006 concept report here.)

Ford Hints at Future Features
AutoPaciific's Future Attributes Demand Study - An Industry Blble
One of AutoPacific's specialties is Future Attribute Demand. Each year, AutoPacific surveys thousands of new car and truck buyers to determine what features they want on their next vehicle. AutoPacific then publishes a report called the Future Attribute Demand Study (FADS). FADS is used by the industry to help guide their decisions in which features to offer on their upcoming cars and trucks.
In addition to FADS, automakers also conduct their own research and use this information to determine where their design and engineering resources for advanced features should be expended.
Ford Features Cadence Will Bring Needed New Technologies to Ford's Products
Ford has given us a glimpse of the cadence of future features that American car buyers can expect to see from the Company in the coming years. In Ford's case, they conducted the research and have been closely evaluating what their competition is doing. Derrick Kuzak, Ford's new head of worldwide product development, states that, "Ford will offer a new feature when it appears that two of our major competitors have offered or appear to be ready to offer it."
In the past Ford has hesitated, often too long, in introducing new features that consumers want. When their internal analysis determined that a new feature might not achieve immediate acceptance and result in incremental sales volume, the Company hesitated. Now, that will change. Competitors, in addition to internal studies, will help guide Ford's features.
So, what new features can we expect from the Dearborn car company?
First, their research shows a strong demand for capless fuel filling. Beginning in 2008, some Ford cars will begin offering capless fuel filling. In this system, behind the fuel filler door is a system that allows the fuel filler nozzle to be inserted without unscrewing a cap.
Ford also will be offering audio systems from Sony and THX surround sound audio on Lincolns. Ford is teaming up with Microsoft in a broadbased vehicle communications, information and entertainment system that will finally give Ford vehicles Bluetooth capability. Up to now, Bluetooth has been an accessory at the Blue Oval.
Lighting is also getting attention. Ford will begin to use interior ambient lighting for things like door handles and cupholders. Even door sill scuff plates on some vehicles will be lighted.
A really cool feature is light through paint. Using this technology rear high mounted brake lights can look like they are bodycolor. Ford's signature keyless entry system buttons can be muted using bodycolor light through paint.
On the safety side, Ford will begin offering some technologies that has been available elsewhere for some time now: blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and collision mitigation systems.
Will Ford's Fast Follower Strategy be Fast Enough?
It appears that Ford's strategy is to be a "fast follower" in technology and not a technology leader. This is OK, as long as they follow fast enough. Having Fords without Bluetooth, iPod integration, playlist management, adaptive cruise, etc puts them well behind their competition. In today's rapidly moving world, this is competitively unacceptable.

Lincoln in the Future - Design Themes
In early December, Ford hosted an event that allowed VehicleVoice and AutoPacific staffers to peek into the future for Ford, Mercury and Lincoln vehicles. One of the more intriguing presentations had to do with the future design direction of their Lincoln brand.
Peter Horbury, a Brit credited with launching Volvo's distinctive styling and now Ford's North American styling chief, discussed the results of a design analysis of Lincoln's heritage design cues. After evaluating coveted Lincolns from the past, the Lincoln design language was distilled into seven distinctive cues. The Lincoln MKR Concept Car seen at the 2007 North American Auto Show is the first vehicle to use all seven of the cues. In the future, every new Lincoln will incorporate at least three of these seven cues.
Based on the styling of the MKR, if Ford does indeed launch Lincolns using these design cues, they may have real winners on their hands. Now, can Alan Mulally find the money to bring these vehicles to market as quickly as they are needed?

Cue 7: Grille - Lincoln cars will have a distinctive split grille opening. There are several variations on this theme, each with a different grille texture. But Lincoln designers have evolved a face that at-a-glance will be identifiable as a Lincoln.
Cue 6: Cantrail - OK, we had never heard this term before either (it appears to be a terms used in railway car design), but this is the intersection point between the A-Pillar and the Roof. To convey an impression of strength, Lincolns will have a strong Cantrail.
Cue 5: Bodyside - Taking a cue from the famous Lincolns of the '60s, '70s and early '80s, Lincolns will have a clean, uncluttered bodyside. This not the vertical slab sides seen on these earlier Lincolns, but can have some curvature in it.
Cue 4: Beltline - Lincolns of old had relatively straight beltlines sometimes with a slight hop-up over the rear fender. This strong beltline often was topped with a chrome molding. Lincoln's modern interpretation shows a more muscular haunch than on previous Lincolns.
Cue 3: Chamfer - Adding to the strong beltline is a break-line in the beltline surface aft of the front doors. This contributes to the muscular haunch idea.
Cue 2: C-Pillar - Lincolns have had a wide C-Pillar that projects a very strong, upscale image. This strong C-Pillar can be used in cars, crossovers or traditional SUVs.
Cue 1: Taillamps - A major identifying design cue for Lincoln is a distinctive taillamp design. Usually this has been a wall-to-wall design as seen on the Mark VIII.
More details on Lincoln's design cues can be seen below the fold.

Grille designs will use a winged motif similarto those in the 1941 Lincoln Continental. Grille textures can be changed to match the entries they are displayed on.

The C-Pillar or D-Pillar will be very strong to evoke Lincoln's upscale image.

Taillamps appear to have more variation than the grille or C/D-Pillar themes. The idea of wall-to-wall taillamps appears to have a wide range of definition.

AutoPacific's Signature Image

AutoPacific's signature image is an original work by Robert Blumhagen in Orange County California. Robert calls his style "California Realism" and that certainly is the case with the great paintings he has done over the years.
This classic Hudson conveys AutoPacific's love for all things automotive from yesterday, to today, to the future.

First Look: 2008 smart fortwo
We brought you the news back in June (click here) that there is a tiny city car making its way to the U.S. market. In early 2008 U.S. buyers will finally be able to opt for this small and economical package. AutoPacific and VehicleVoice have some of the first pictures of the model, and here they are. Though we won't get the car until early 2008, European buyers can pick one up beginning in April 2007. At the smart USA website, you can keep current on the events smart has hosted to familiarize us with the car or sign up for monthly newsletters about the car.

How small is small?
The new smart is only 106.1 inches long, with a wheelbase of 73.5 inches. It is 61.4 inches wide, and a relatively tall package at 60.7 inches. Just to put this in perspective, smart is nearly 64 inches shorter than Chevrolet's smallest offering, the Aveo. The 2008MY MINI is nearly 40 inches longer, the Mazda MX-5 about 51 inches longer, and even the Toyota Yaris hatchback is almost 44 inches longer. The smart could find itself an instant favorite among some circles. It has a unique personality, with its small size it fits anywhere, it is light, and it offers very economical powertrains. Wanna feel like you're helping the world and create your own parking spot on Rodeo Drive? Buy a smart.

Like MINI, smart Keeps Its Charm
Compared with the fortwo (see here) that has been available in Europe in various versions since 1999, this new generation keeps a similar look. Like the MINI that BMW has revived, the smart has become a bit of a cult classic, so keeping the flavor of the first is a good move for this small car. Though the new car is bigger, parking feats like the one pictured above and those we wrote about in August 2006 (click here) will still be possible.

Optimized for U.S. Safety Standards
Don't let the outside fool you; there are significant changes throughout and it has grown slightly. The prior model did not meet some U.S. requirements, and this one was designed with us in mind as well as international city-car needs.
The smart starts with a tridion safety cell surrounded by plastic body panels. This time, doors are steel for U.S. crash safety. The tridion safety cell, reinforced with metal in key areas, protects passengers like a hard shell. Head and thorax side airbags will be available, though ESP with ABS and electronic brake force distribution will be standard along with front airbags.

International markets choose between two three-cylinder engines, though the gasoline-fed unit is available in three versions. U.S. motive power has not been announced, but you can expect at least the 84HP turbocharged 1.0L 12v three-cylinder. Normally aspirated, that engine is offered in 61HP and 71HP versions, along with a 45HP 800cc diesel, in Europe. The transmission is a Getrag five-speed automated manual, with an electrically operated clutch. Shifting is done by lever, with steering-wheel-mounted paddles available.

Exterior styling gets a somewhat more aggressive look. smart describes it as more masculine, perhaps trying to get away from the more "cute" association of the first generation. Inside, the curved instrument panel has been dropped in favor of a traditional straight layout, another change in response to U.S. crash regulations.
Though the U.S. lineup may be different, in Europe smart launches with three trim levels. The pure is the base car, the pulse the sporty one, and the passion just gets everything. While the coupe pulse and passion get a panoramic roof, the cabrio gets an electric soft top that is fully automatic and infinitely adjustable, even at driving speeds, as well as getting a heated glass rear window. The roof bars can also be stowed in a tailgate compartment.

fortwo's European standard equipment list includes remote locking, exterior temperature indicator, turn signals with a lane-change feature, and speed-sensitive interval wipers. Options include air conditioning, power heated outside mirrors, leather and heated seats, the ISOFIX child seat fasteners, uplevel stereo, and a portable navigation system.

Toyota FJ Cruiser - Ubiquitous at SEMA 2006
Yes, SEMA wanted to salute American Muscle this year and they were successful. In front of the North Hall and inside the lobby rows of Muscle Cars both past and present lined up to receive their deserving accolades. The big block Chevys, Fords, and Dodges pulled at my heartstrings. I could hear the gurgling exhaust notes, feel the rumbling deep in my chest, and smell the high octane burning through four barrel carbs, down high rise manifolds, across forged pistons, and out the dual exhaust with an irregular lope. I kept reaching for that Hurst® shifter and mashing down with my right foot, adrenaline pumping hard through my veins. But it was time to stop daydreaming! Today I would be walkin’… a lot.

In my quest to see most if not all of SEMA I found it interesting that on the front lines there may have been blown Camaros, tweaked Challengers, and race-ready Mustangs but in the trenches Toyota’s FJ Cruiser was chosen by many exhibitors to strut their aftermarket stuff. From Toyota’s own exhibit flaunting TRD (Toyota Racing Development) and an off-road prepped FJs, the latter with a twin-stick Atlas® t-case, to those companies supplying aftermarket bumpers, stereo equipment, and creating convertibles; the FJ’s were everywhere.

The FJ Cruiser must have been new enough (entering the market in early 2006), unique enough to draw plenty of attention with its retro-styled exterior (derived from the 1960-1983 FJ40) and also inexpensive enough to be cost-efficient for those smaller companies with smaller budgets. Starting with a base price of about $22K. Whatever the reason, the Toyota FJ Cruiser seemed to be the model of choice at SEMA.
Fun Facts:
Only current vehicle to use the name TOYOTA spelled out
Based on the Hi-Lux platform shared with the Toyota 4Runner
At 183.9 Inches long the FJ is the longest compact SUV offered in North America
ALL FJ’s are built in Japan and ONLY sold in North America
Introduced at the 2003 Chicago Auto Show and in production form at the following North American International Auto Show the FJ Cruiser (not originally intended for production) was pushed into production due to the overwhelming positive public response.

SEMA 2006 - Twisted Steel and Sex Appeal

Every year automotive industry guru’s and product specialists converge on the Las Vegas Convention Center to promote their products, meet the competition, and network. This year an estimated 145,000 people gathered to celebrate American Muscle and flaunt their piece of the automotive puzzle. From guys named Joe who craft cosmetic interior bolts to the major auto manufacturers like Ford, GM, and Toyota the Specialty Equipment Market Association has created a forum for almost anything in the automotive aftermarket. Bring your walking shoes, but leave your wallets at home because it’s time to visit the 40th annual SEMA show.
As died-in-the-wool car guys, AutoPacific and VehicleVoice correspondents covered the show. Ah, the aching feet!

The irony behind SEMA is that there are miles of exhibits, thousands of vehicles, and millions of amazing products, but you can’t purchase anything but a t-shirt or hat. What makes SEMA so special is the passion. Everyone at the show is passionate about his or her part in the automotive aftermarket and that excitement can be seen in their sculptures. The experience could be likened to that of an art aficionado visiting the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, only you're actually able to meet the artisans along with their work. There were superchargers, suspension kits, pistons, drivelines, radiators, batteries, wheels, tires, and of course vehicles with parts that fused form and function while screaming capability.

American Muscle - Then, Now and in the Future - SEMA is There
This year SEMA paid homage to American Muscle. From the early years when our forefathers removed fenders and dropped in a flat head V8 to the much-anticipated 2009 Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger awaiting their release into the same pasture as Ford’s Mustang pony car. Many fine examples were on display providing evidence that Americans still yearn for that skewed power to weight ratio.

For years Chrysler, Ford, and GM’s performance parts divisions have offered aftermarket high horsepower engines and performance products. From tweaking your ride to building a vehicle from the ground up, they have been instrumental in bringing bolt-on performance home. They have been known to try and streamline the process by offering high-horsepower or ‘special’ vehicles like Daimler Chrysler’s SRT-8/SRT-10 packages, Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT), or GM’s Super Sport models. But Ford may soon up the ante.

Rat Fink (Noticed around the hot-rod and custom car scene since the 1950's and 60's) posed for a picture before he checked my credentials and let me enter the Ford exhibit.

Ford’s press conference on Tuesday morning found Carol Shelby and Edsel Ford standing next to a row of Ford Mustang GT's just before Ford announced that they would be bringing the Boss 302 back to the aftermarket in early 2007. Ford will be selling a crate motor 302 V8... unfortunately, it is not the whole car. Ford also announced that they will be working with Chip Foose (from TLC’s famed ‘Overhaulin’) on a number of vehicles. Ford plans to cooperatively build vehicles with Foose (along with his retirement fund). The hope is that together they can produce vehicles that will appeal to prospective buyers looking to set themselves apart from that run of the mill Mustang owner.

General Motors' exhibit boasted a supercar called the EcoJet. This striking vehicle sits on a modified Corvette Z06 platform, runs on bio-diesel and is powered by a Honeywell LT-101 turbine engine producing 650 horses and 400 lb ft. of torque. This tribute to GM's early Firebird concept vehicles was a collaborative effort by Jay Leno, his team of mechanics at 'Big Dog Garage', and GM’s Design Studio. I thought maybe Jay could be the new Harley Earl?

GM also had a 5.3 liter V8-powered Hummer H3 (gone was the inline-5) and their 427 Chevrolet Silverado concept truck with the same 7.0 liter V8 found in the Corvette Z06.

Next to Mopar Alley a Dodge Viper was out in front of a Pontiac Solstice and Ford Mustang during a 'drifting' presentation.

Michelin’s exhibit presented spectators with the most amazing collection of vehicles at SEMA. The key to their collection was that all vehicles in the exhibit were originally sold with Michelin tires. From the Bugatti Veyron on a turntable to the encircling, McLaren F1 LM, Fisker Tramonto, RUF Porsche 911, Pagani Zonda F, Saleen S7, and Koenigsegg CCX, any automotive enthusiast would be impressed. This particular Bugatti Veyron on display just so happened to be serial number 001. As an aside, Veyron’s come stock with a W-16 engine, 1001 horsepower and sold for a mere $1.3 million.

SEMA is amazing; from air cleaners and wenches to bumpers and hitches, the exhibits are endless. It is a feast for the eye’s and testament to true talent. With enough time and enough money there seems to be no limit. What a manufacturer may see as the end-all, be-all product, the aftermarket sees as simply the baseline product in need of passion, panache, and performance.

BMW's 3-Series Gets Power Hardtop
Though BMW does not officially pull the wraps off the latest 3-Series convertible until Detroit's North American International Auto Show in January 2007 and sales do not begin until spring or summer 2007, the company has released some early photos and information on the European spec cars. VehicleVoice and AutoPacific are here to bring them to you.

BMW joins the ranks of power retractable hardtop convertibles with the new 3-Series convertible, a move that was necessary to stay competitive. Even the Mazda MX-5 Miata offers an optional power retractable hardtop now. While Mazda boasts a 12-second time to drop MX-5's top, BMW claims a competitive 22 seconds for the new 3-Series top.

The 3-Series convertible competes against the likes of Volvo C70 and Volkswagen Eos, and both offer retractable hardtops. Hardtops provide for better rearward visibility, with a larger glass area and smaller C-pillar than conventional softtops, and more comfortable year-round drivability. Though once upon a time deemed too expensive in most cases, costs seem to be coming down and these are fast becoming required for convertibles of all sizes.

300HP for 335i Convertible
Until a new M3 convertible arrives, the 300HP turbocharged 3.0L I6 335i will be the cream of the 3-Series convertible crop on both sides of the ocean. At launch, we will see the 330i version in the States along with a 328i, sporting the 3.0L in-line six-cylinder engine in 230HP normally aspirated form. These are the same engines as offered in the coupe, though the convertible does not offer AWD. As is true of most European models, the convertible will offer a much wider engine range in markets outside of the States. The standard transmission is a six-speed manual transmission, with an optional Steptronic six-speed automatic that has been updated and gets paddle shifters.
Long List of Standard Equipment
Convertibles carry a price premium over their fixed-roof brethren, and usually also get more standard equipment. The 2008 3-Series convertible is no exception. One of the cool options will be the ability to drop the top using a remote. That option is bundled with Comfort Access, which turns the BMW remote into a smart key for unlocking/locking the car and starting it. Xenon adaptive headlamps are standard, as is an upgraded version of BMW's iDrive system with eight programmable keys surrounding the controller.
The convertible also brings BMW's latest Dynamic Stability Control system to the 3-Series range. The system enhances braking aids with brake drying, brake standby, brake fade compensation, corner braking control, and start-off assist (for hill starts).
Many convertibles launched in recent times also manage more effectively the interior heating and cooling, compensating for when the vehicle is operated with the top down. BMW is no exception. Though optional, the automatic air conditioning system adds a Convertible mode that uses the exterior temperature sensor for adjusting blower intensity rather than the interior temperature sensor. When the roof is closed, the system operates as normal. BMW also treats the convertible's leather upholstery with a special pigment that is supposed to keep the seats and armrest cool even when the top is left down in the sun by reflecting the infra-red radiation that comes along with sunshine.
22 Seconds, by Remote
The series of photos below gives you an idea of the process, and indicate that it can be initiated by an optional remote control.

Crystal Cove Concours Kaput - Goodbye Croissant Derelicts!
Today marks the final Saturday morning Crystal Cove mini concours in Newport Beach. Starting at 0700 each Saturday morning for years, Crystal Cove has become the spot for car owners and enthusiasts to gather over coffee and donuts on Saturdays. Unlike Donut Derelicts up Pacific Coast Highway that has a hot rod flavor, Crystal Cove had a exotic car flavor even though there were a few hot rods and classics thrown in. VehicleVoice and AutoPacific correspondents and many local auto industry folks were on hand to bid farewell.
Irvine Company Crushes Crystal Cove Car Event
Seen here is Barry Meguiar of Meguiar Waxes and Freeman Thomas of Ford. Meguiar is explaining what has gone on concerning the weekly Crystal Cove event. He describes typical Irvine Company "gestapo tactics" in shutting down the event. An approach to local upscale mall - Fashion Island - led Irvine Company to warn the retailers there not to discuss holding the event at Fashion Island.
What were the reasons for kicking the event out? Apparently there was too much traffic congestion. The Newport Beach Police said traffic was not a particular problem. The cars were too high performance and unsafe at speed. Newport Beach Police said that they had not given out an extraordinary number of tickets before, during or after the event for the years it has been held. And finally, the local residents complained of noise and congestion. Heck, the local residents were some of primary participants.
The event was over each Saturday at 9AM a full hour before the retail stores in the upscale Crystal Cove strip mall where there is a Starbucks, nice pastry shop and Trader Joes. The Starbucks and pastry shop will sorely miss the Saturday morning crowds - business they wouldn't get otherwise.
Ford to the Rescue
Ford circulated flyers at the final Crystal Cove event and opened their Premier Automotive Group and Mazda Campus to the Crystal Cove enthusiasts. PAG and Mazda is adjacent to the Irvine Spectrum - another upscale shopping area, but without the oceanside ambiance of Crystal Cove. The Ford venue promises to be more spacious and more inviting... but I think it is on Irvine land as well.
Just to show the broad appeal of the event, here are some images taken on the last day...

Highlights and Lowlights - Orange County Auto Show
After disseminating Motorist's Choice Awards (an AutoPacific and IntelliChoice award recognizing the most satisfying and highest value vehicles) to MCA winners it was time to preview vehicles showcased at the 2007-Model Orange County Auto Show. There were some vehicles you’d want to take home, a few you’d keep covered in the garage and others you’d never let onto your driveway.

Subaru WRX STI
Starting at Subaru, the WRX STI is still a favorite among enthusiasts. For those turbocharged, intercooled, Rally Car junkies who need more than an over-the-counter Impreza, the 300 horsepower, 300 lb. Ft. of torque, WRX STI comes as more of a prescription or antidote to the common car.

Remember the Trans Am Mustangs? Parnelli Jones and George Follmer vs. Mark Donohue
Winding our way through the course we came across the new Mustangs; including the GT500 and Boss 302. I kept looking around for a dark blue Sunoco Camaro and Mark Donohue out in front of the Mustard Yellow Boss 302, reminiscent of the TransAm Series in the late 60’s and early 70’s, but to no avail (maybe 2009?). Of course, then we'd need Parnelli Jones and George Follmer to compete.

Those retro Ford Mustangs may be galloping along through open pastures at the moment but it won’t be too long before we see the Mustang archrivals of yesteryear saddling up for another canter through the meadow. Built off of the Chrysler 300M platform and coated in ‘HEMI’ Orange paint (now called Orange Pearl-Thanks Daimler) the ‘muscle car’ that may beat the Chevrolet Camaro to showrooms is the Dodge Challenger. Fitted with a 6.1 Liter HEMI engine, pumping out 425 horses, the American Muscle Car era will be back in full swing. That is, until fuel prices neuter the craze once again.

Lincoln MKX - Em Kay Ex
For those seeking a little bit more estrogen, front wheel or all-wheel-drive, and a lot more utility, Lincoln was showing off their all-new MKX. The MKX is an upscale Ford Edge with fascia that has been likened to an integral bug catcher. It utilizes the Ford CD3 car platform, shared with the Zephyr (MKZ), Milan and Fusion. Before its introduction and after some entanglements with Honda, regarding the Acura MDX, it was called a “Mark-Ex”, but now we’re back to “Em-Kay-Ex”. This spawned Lincoln’s current promotional campaign where new owners receive a can of alphabet soup and a Speak & Spell with every new vehicle.
Lincoln will probably sell quite a few MKX's but it seems like they’re just catching up to the competition. It’s an SUV built off of a car platform. This type of crossover SUV, like the Lexus RX (built off of the Camry) was being produced almost a decade ago. Does it take a disappointment like the Lincoln Aviator and nearly ten years for action to be taken?
The 2007 Lincoln Navigator was also on display. It carried a front grill fashioned in a similar style, but what was even more interesting was the 1970’s Ford Country Squire instrument cluster they’ve wired up into the new Navigator's dash.

Other Fresh New Entries at The OC Auto Show
After playing the name game over at Lincoln it was off to visit other new arrivals like the GMC Acadia (pictured above), Audi Q7, Mitsubishi Outlander, and Toyota Tundra. The GMC Acadia is a Crossover SUV offering built off of the Lambda platform. It will share much of it’s sheet metal with the Saturn Outlook but will flaunt some more professional grade features like exterior rear view mirrors with integrated turn signals and an interior that flaunts brushed aluminum rather than wood. But both the Saturn Outlook and GMC Acadia have the ‘Smart Slide Feature’ where the second row seats can move fore and aft or collapsed with one hand. This makes getting into the third row seat really easy, not to mention that a full-size human can fit into the third row with decent headroom.

Audi Q7
Even though Audi recently decided to increase production of the Q7 from 200 to 300 units a day they just anounced that it will be cutting back on Q7 shipments to the US (from 50% to 30%). Built in Bratislava, Slovakia they are selling much better in Europe than the U.S., which I found surprising given their size. However, with the importation issue, rising fuel costs and the weak dollar the future of the Q7 remains uncertain.

Mitsubishi Outlander
The all-new Outlander is said to be superior to the first generation. Larger and more powerful, it is to both ride and handle better as it sits on the next-generation Lancer platform.

Toyota Tundra
After backing Ford, GM, and Dodge into a perverbial corner (read: Full-size truck market) Toyota is going in for the knock-out. The full-size truck market seemed to be a safe haven for Ford, GM, and Dodge, with loyal, even patriotic buyers, and very little competition. The Nissan Titan took a stab at it, but it might just be the Toyota Tundra that's grown up, built the muscle, and secured the towing capacity (over 10,000 lbs.) to really take on the competition. However, the full-size truck market is fickle and the dynamic in this segment is different than any other. It will be interesting to find out how the new Tundra sits with full-size truck owners. It will really be those consumers who decide the Tundra's fate.

Paris Auto Show: Audi R8 and Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione
Sports Car Concepts Reach Production
Three years ago, in September 2003, there were two head-turning concept stars at the Frankfurt auto show. This year, the Paris auto show (Mondial de l'Automobile) hosted introductions of both in production form. Both are low volume propositions, both borrow chassis from related low-volume models, both offer 420HP V8 engines, but each takes a different personality. One is the German all-wheel-drive, mid-engine Audi R8 and the other the front-engine, rear-drive Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione.
The good news is that North America will see the R8. Unfortunately, the Alfa is a tease. Though the brand intends to return to the North American market, the limited-edition 8C is not among the expected products.

Audi's R8 Revealed
The Audi Le Mans Quattro concept View image from 2003 commemorated the beginning of Audi's dominance at Le Mans, where Audi has won five times. The Le Mans Quattro concept developed into a production car, the R8. The R8 is Audi's first mid-engined sports car, of course featuring quattro four-wheel drive (standard torque split is 44 percent front/56 percent rear). The engine is the direct-injection, 420HP 4.2L DOHC 32v V8. The body uses Audi's Aluminum Space Frame concept, and the chassis was developed along with the Lamborghini Gallardo. In Germany, the order books opened on September 28, 2006, with the first European deliveries during the first half of 2007.

Among the firsts for the R8 will be the option for ordering LED headlights, beginning in late 2007. LEDs have been used in production taillights, but prior to this not for production headlights. The standard car gets a leather and alcantara interior. Navigation and MMI are optional as well, and the interior looks crisp and clean. A smaller MMI knob and round HVAC controls in the center stack complement the large gauges in the gauge cluster, as creature comforts in this driver's car are not left behind.

Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione
Beautiful, Italian, fast, red, two-seater. If not a Ferrari, must be an Alfa. While Alfa Romeo is working on a return to the North American market, it may not include this mouthwatering piece of work. The 8C borrows a name from Alfa's history (honoring both a V8 from the Twenties and Thirties and Alfa's racing history) and a platform from Maserati. The sleek carbon fiber body goes over a 420HP 4.7L V8 mated to a six-speed manumatic transmission.

The production car has changed little between the 2003 concept View image and now. It was certainly one of the stars of the Paris show this year, swamped and kept in an enclosed stand with long lines to get up close during press days.

Notes From 2006 Paris Auto show
The 2006 Mondial de l'Automobile has arrived, and VehicleVoice correspondents and AutoPacific staff were on hand, gathering information to bring to you. Our first notes are here, but you can count on more to come over the coming weeks. One of the most important of the international auto shows, the Paris show happens every two years. While many of the products shown at Paris are not expected to cross the pond to the United States, it is fun and interesting to take a look at the automotive market in other regions.
Chevrolet WTCC Ultra
GM is using products from the GM-Daewoo tie-up to establish itself in Europe. Entries that had previously been sold in Europe as Daewoos now wear the Chevy bow-tie. The lower-middle C segment is large in Europe, and many players in that segment also compete on rally circuits like the World Touring Car Championship racing series. The WTCC operates more like NASCAR for manufacturers in Europe, while Indy Car and F1 could be said to be more similar. Like NASCAR, WTCC cars are generally based on vehicles available at dealerships. Chevy can claim two wins on the circuit and looks committed to playing there. Also significant about the WTCC Ultra is that its design is an exaggerated version of the direction of future Chevy products, particularly outside of North America. The 2.0L common-rail direct-injection diesel is a version of one offered in the European Chevrolet Captiva, though output for the WTCC is 190HP. The choice of diesel over gasoline-fed engine also gave Chevrolet an opportunity to further develop diesel expertise.

Citroen C4 Picasso
Going up against Renault's Scenic and Opel's Zafira, Citroen introduced a seven-passenger people mover. The C4 Picasso gets interesting new technology in a system that helps drivers determine if there is enough space in a particular parking spot as they cruise by, though a similar product for Europe from Volkswagen, the Touran, goes one further and can park for you, as does the all-new Lexus LS large luxury sedan.

Daihatsu Materia
Does a bB sell as sweet as a Daihatsu? With the second-generation of Toyota's bB (known as Scion xB in the States), Daihatsu has taken over assembly and has added a version for their own range. In Japan, the Daihatsu version is called Coo. Really. In Europe, it is called Materia and was unveiled in Paris. The same size and styling applies, but Europe sees only the 1.5L engine while Coo offers a 1.3L as well. This is the second generation of the model that forms the basis of the Scion xB. Though the bB is one of the smaller entries in the Toyota range, it is one of the larger products to be found in Daihatsu's lineup.

Ford Mondeo and iosis X
Remember the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique? They were based on the European Ford Mondeo, the third generation of which arrives in Europe early next year. While the Contour and Mystique were off target in the USA, Mondeo became a good seller in Europe and has evolved into a very serious bit of motoring machinery. At this year's Paris auto show, a near-production concept of the wagon was revealed. It continues a styling theme set by the Galaxy and S-Max, both introduced midway through 2006. No surprise, the three products share a platform and engines as well as a family look.

Based on the same platform as the Mondeo and the Land Rover LR2, Ford showed off its iosis X concept. The iosis X is expected to be launched in Europe, though the concept shown isn't quite as production-ready as the Mondeo that was next to it. The iosis X concept furthers the face of the iosis concept from Frankfurt in 2005, as does the Mondeo. If only Ford's North American products could carry such expressive styling!

Kia cee'd/Hyundai Arnejs
Kia's cee'd production model and pro-cee'd concept ride on the same platform as another Paris show offering, the Hyundai Arnejs. Though this is the platform used for the latest Hyundai Elantra, the versions shown in Paris aren't scheduled for the States. Both were designed by the design centers in Europe and will be built in Slovakia (the Kia) and the Czech Republic (the Hyundai). These two entries are aimed at Europe's class C market, dominated by the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus, and Opel Astra.

Mercedes-Benz Shows Off AMG CL and 4Matic S-Class
As with several other models, the all-new CL gets the latest AMG 6.3L V8. While a launch date for the States was not specified, the model will deliver 525HP. Standard features will include the Pre-Safe occupant sensor system, AMG styling tweaks, AMG sports suspension built around the standard Active Body Control, and AMG high-performance brakes. The Pre-Safe brakes and Distronic Plus advanced cruise control systems will be options. Alongside the CL 63 AMG, European-spec 4MATIC-equipped S-Class models were shown. In Europe, it will be offered with two V8 and two diesel engines; in the States, the all-wheel-drive system is likely to be used with the S 550.

Skoda Joyster
Skoda showed off a three-door hatchback concept taking the wraparound windscreen cue from their recently launched Roomster. Joyster's production future is uncertain, but the most interesting elements of this car have nothing to do with the typical engine or even exterior shape. Reaction at the show was strong; though I was near the concept several times after its reveal, the crowd precluded show photos. Skoda offers somewhat different approach to answering consumer demand for including their cars into the technology and infotainment lifestyle. Joyster features docking station for portable computers that runs the car's infotainment capability when docked into the car. Software can be dowloaded from Skoda for running internet phone, music files, and satellite navigation. The computer can keep you up to date on the car's running information, like tire pressure and oil temp.

Between the computer setup and the rear tailgate that can be turned into a bench seat, Skoda says Joyster "mutates to become a party zone" at the weekend. Among the interesting facets of this solution is the proprietary nature of the Skoda system; no mention was made of compatability with other software or systems.

Smart fortwo
A disappointment! Though smart was expected to show the fortwo at the Paris show, ahead of spring 2007 sales, they instead revealed illustrations. A hint of the next generation has been shown as a sand sculpture, however, at a volleyball championship event in Germany.

Is the Sky the Limit? - The 2007 GM Collection
General Motors hosted a two-day event in sunny Southern California showcasing quite a few of their 2007 makes and models. The event kicked off with a press conference at Saturn of Temecula with the first day’s events focusing on Saturn’s new lineup, followed by a ride and drive down to San Diego. Choices for the drive included the new Saturn Sky, Aura, and Vue. The second day of the event featured a broader spectrum of GM’s lineup ranging from a turbo charged Saab 9-5 to a Mid-Duty GMC Top-Kick towing a boat touting GM’s Vortec engine. With a handful of GM vehicles poised to attack the autocross course or engage in a ‘truck-pull’, at the end of the day the tough part would be deciding which models were the most note worthy.
I was at the event as VehicleVoice contributor and AutoPacific analyst.

An obvious choice at the top of the list was the Saturn Sky, which breaks from the conservative styling cues typically found on every vehicle bearing the Saturn marque. With its more aggressive lines, pronounced fender peaks and menacing front end the Sky definitely makes a bold statement. Many may liken it to a miniature Corvette or GM’s version of Mazda’s MX-5 (Miata), but not many will call it boring.

The Saturn Sky
Positioned as a vehicle that will signal change at Saturn, the Sky is built off of the Kappa Platform, which it shares with the Pontiac Solstice (pictured above). The choice between the Sky and the Solstice really becomes a matter of interior and exterior preference. On the first day, at the end of the press conference I made my way over to a silver Sky to begin the drive down to San Diego. I couldn’t just walk by and leave it sitting there; it actually looked like it wanted to hit the pavement running. But, as we all know, looks can be deceiving.
Inside and Out
After a quick walk around, the exterior lines and execution looked to be quite good and the interior was what you would expect from a ‘sporty car’ produced by GM. It was a little chintzy and quite sparse with three climate control dials, a stereo system/CD player and a few cubbyholes and a lot of plastic; but it did have cup holders! After slipping in behind the wheel, quickly evaluating the shift pattern of the short throw five-speed gear box, I turned over the 2.4 liter 177 horsepower engine and followed the procession of Saturn’s onto the highway.

On the Road
Following a short stint on arterial streets we reached the twisty rural roads leaving Temecula where I quickly realized that I had gotten into the wrong car. It was the bright red Saturn Sky behind me that really drove that point home, forever catching me up hills and on the straightaways. Once the solid yellow line on the pavement broke I finally got the chance to catch a fading glimpse of it, as it overtook me and left me in the dust. I did of course take notice of the all-important ‘Turbo’ badge affixed to the right rear side of the bumper. That badge denotes the fact that it was the new Sky Red Line; which cradles a testosterone direct injected 2.0 Liter Turbo charged engine producing 260 horsepower and 260lb. Ft. of torque. That’s 2.1 horsepower per cubic inch… Whoa!

At the next pit stop I fed the two gerbils under the hood of the Sky I was driving and promptly traded keys with the driver of the Sky Red Line. What a difference. The turbo definitely makes the Sky a viable counter to the Mazda MX-5 (Miata). The main differences being the turbo charged 4-cylinder, exterior styling, and the fact that it takes two men and a Boy Scout to get the drop top up or down on the Sky. The Mazda MX-5 (Miata) has a normally aspirated I-4 and now has an (available) power retractable hardtop that goes up or down in about 12 seconds. Both the Sky and MX-5 (Miata) are comparably priced, a new Sky roadster starts at $24K with the Red Line Turbo kicking in at about $29K. Of course if styling is an issue GM also offers the Pontiac Solstice (or Solstice GXP).

Other Offerings
There were a few surprises over the course of the two days, like the Saturn Aura XR (pronounced 'Ora' - shown above), Vue Green Line and the Chevrolet Cobalt SS. The Aura XR was very pleasant to drive and came with a 3.6 Liter V6 and an automatic 6-speed with a very slick paddle-shifting option. The torque-steer was nearly unnoticeable and the vehicle felt solid albeit the interior felt like it fell under a cost reduction mandate (the Aura show car at Detroit last year had a spectacular interior... ah, those beanies!). From the instrument cluster gauges to the lack of grab bars refinement was lacking but for around 24K it was a very nice sedan.

The Vue Green Line is GM’s answer to the Hybrid craze. It offers hybrid buyers a way to ‘go green without going broke’ and gives GM an Escape Hybrid competitor. For about 23K, about two or three thousand dollars more than a typical Saturn Vue, you can drive a hybrid and get 32mpg on the highway. I would venture to guess that Saturn would be adding the ‘Green Line’ to the rest of their line up in the future.
The Chevrolet Cobalt SS doesn’t seem to get much press attention and I’m not sure why. It seemed to be a favorite by many at the autocross course and after driving it I would equate it to GM’s version of Honda’s Civic Si. The Cobalt SS is sprightly, fun, and affordable, it must be a kick for those interested in an entry-level vehicle.

So What?
The two day’s with GM proved that after losing 10.6 billion dollars in 2005 they have pulled out the defibrillator, hooked up the electrodes and decided to market “value-driven, fuel-efficient vehicles”. They’ve spooled up, earned $400 million in the first quarter of 2006 and are working on turning this aircraft carrier of a company around. The hope is that many prospective buyer’s will take notice and want to spool up one of the turbo’s on the new Sky Red Line or drive off the lot in a new GMT900 truck with active fuel management (*no longer called cylinder deactivation – it just doesn’t sound good). GM is on the offensive and even with UAW unions, health care issues and international exchange rates they plan on remaining the world’s largest automaker.
