Road Noise: Am I old enough for disdain toward the young yet?

A lot of press releases cross my desk here at Vehicle Voice World Internet Headquarters R Us, and over the past few weeks, I’ve seen several headlined with variations on “10 Best Cars for Back to School!”

Wow. My parents got pretty worked up when they just had to lay down a hundred bucks for a graphic calculator; the concept of a back-to-school car probably would have sent my dad into a coma.

In my day, we rode the cheese. And we liked it. You kids get off my lawn!

First Drive: 2009 Kia Borrego

Nicely Developed, Designed, and Executed, but Can Kia Overcome Bad Timing?
In the midst of a shaky economy and frenzy over high fuel costs that hasn't quite died down, Kia's new Borrego appears to be the wrong product at the wrong time. Borrego isn't alone in facing an uphill battle this fall, as the Dodge Challenger muscle car, Cadillac CTS-V performance sport sedan, Ford F-150 and Dodge Ram pickups, and king of any hill Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 are just a few of the other thirsty, function-oriented entries this year.

Borrego_trees_bl.jpg

Yet Kia may pull some success out of an apparently difficult situation. First, Borrego is well done, competitive, and has nothing to apologize for. Second, Borrego is supported by a significant marketing program, advertising mid-size SUVs when no one else dares; this is the one segment with comparatively little ad clutter today and with the chance to grab some buyers feeling guilty about their suburban jungle Expeditions, or looking to shave a bit off the monthly payment to compensate for increased fuel costs. Third, the model is sold in South Korea as well and Kia could offer a lower-content version for some emerging markets if they chose. Finally, if sales don't take off as expected, the economy is the easy the fall guy. If sales beat (likely readjusted) targets, then they've got a success to report back home.

Exhaust Note #26: Don’t Just Cruze Along, GM; You’re Not Out of the Woods Yet

Last week, GM loudly trumpeted the pending arrival of the Chevrolet Cruze compact car, to be officially unveiled at next month’s Mondial de l’Automobile (that’s Paris Motor Show to us ‘Murricans). First, they unveiled photos of the car and then revealed the real thing at the Lordstown, OH plant where the car will be built for American consumers.

Chevrolet_2011_Cruze_front34.jpg
This is a US-market Chevrolet compact? Yes, and you'll see it in Paris next month. Sacre bleu!

As earlier spy photos had suggested, the Cruze, which in the US will effectively be the next generation Cobalt, is a very handsome compact sedan. It’s as appealing as the Cobalt is appliance-like. There’s some real design going on here with a sleek profile and great surface tension and great interaction between the exterior’s various design elements. GM also promises a very intriguing efficient powertrain choice in the form of a tiny 1.4L direct injection turbo engine. This engine is rumored to produce at least 140HP (on par with much larger engines) while achieving 45 miles per gallon. It will also be among the first compacts available with a 6-speed automatic.

July 2008 Fuel Price Survey Results

July, 2008, Much Like May, 2008

The July fuel price survey was in the field from July 9 to 14, and 1,248 respondents participated. Essentially, the news from early July is much the same as the news from the May, 2008 survey, but significantly different from a year ago.

The median price paid for fuel was $3.89 in July, up only 10 cents over the last two months, but up $1.06 over August, 2007.

Respondents were asked about their current vehicle segment and the vehicle segment they would select if they were to replace their current vehicle. The increase in consideration for Small Cars was 11% last August, 54% in May, 2008 and 60% in July, 2008. Segments suffering a decline in consideration include: SUVs (-37%), Pickup Trucks (also -37%), Large/Luxury Cars (-23%), and Minivans (-20%).

Based on the responses to current and preferred replacement powertrain questions it is clear that there is somewhat greater interest in diesel engines (+180%) and a huge increase in hybrid consideration (+780%). The diesel and hybrid consideration is much the same in July and May of this year, but relative to last August, diesel consideration has declined (perhaps reflecting higher diesel prices) while hybrid gasoline interest has increased. As might be expected, 4-cylinder consideration is on the increase while interest in 6 and 8 cylinder engines continues to decrease.

Road Noise: 2009 Ford Flex Woody

Right in Our Own Backyard
On my way home from a meeting yesterday afternoon, this "beauty" caught my eye. And, yeah, I had to stop in and see how much they're asking for it and if anyone's actually buying them. We've known that the option would be available, though not supplied by Ford directly, has been floating around for a while, but this was our first in-the-vinyl-and-tin sighting.

FlexWoody_1.jpg

Though it seems that the same people who talk about how ugly such options also bemoan the use of vinyl to create a wood look over heavy, expensive, and difficult-to-maintain real wood, the Flex actually wears this niche choice as well as possible, and far better than just about any other modern-day car.

2009 Dodge Challenger: And the Gang's All Here

Challenger Update
Seems only yesterday, really all the way back in May, that we brought you our first-drive impressions of the 2008 Challenger SRT8, the one with the 425HP HEMI and automatic transmission. That day, and my many, many laps on the track, is set to always stand out as a favorite.

And now we've had the chance to drive most of the full 2009 Dodge Challenger lineup, which began rolling into dealers in August. Among the highlights: six-speed manual transmission! What muscle car can proudly raise its head without one, no matter how few are actually ordered?

Dod_09_Challenger_bl_a.jpg

Full Range: V6 SE, 372HP HEMI R/T, and 425HP HEMI SRT8
The 2008MY for Challenger was a short, limited run of 6500 or so SRT8 products. The 2009MY offers something for everyone looking for a cool, powerful-looking large coupe, whether looking for the entry V6 or the crushing SRT8.

Challenger is impressive in its own right. It is accessible, in image and cost. It is powerful and commanding, if not subtle or graceful. The range starts with the V6-powered SE for $21,995, moves to the well-balanced $29,995 R/T, and supplies total go-fast gearheads of all ages with the affordable $39,995 SRT8.

Exhaust Note #25: NextCruise - How the Future Fared on Woodward

NextCruise was billed as a fun, eco-friendly addition to the gas-guzzling fun of the Woodward Dream Cruise. We were promised engaging displays, a glimpse into the future and the opportunity for some quality time behind the wheel of hybrids, clean diesels and alternative fuel vehicles. Did things pan out as organizers had hoped?

The future (clean diesel, in this case), craftily hides inside a Grand Cherokee.

2008 Woodward Dream Cruise, Part II

Another Perfect August Day
A few weeks ago, I spent the afternoon at the Meadow Brook Concours d' Elegance. While the West Coast had Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, this weekend we had the 14th annual Woodward Dream Cruise, turning the area Woodward from Pleasant Ridge to Pontiac into an automotive playground. Below the jump, are just some of the vehicles that caught my eye.

Rolls-Truck.jpg
Tell me, where else will you see these two vehicles kept pristine and rollin' along the same boulevard?

Or a toy motoring along next to the delivery van?

2009 Mazda6: Moving On Up, But Keeping It Real

Let’s get the big “a-ha” about the 2009 Mazda6 out of the way first: the Mazda6 has grown up to be a fully respectable member of society, but it has kept almost all of what made the original so appealing to keen drivers. It’s the automotive equivalent of Richard Branson, a man who has evolved to become one of the most admired business leaders in the world while retaining all of the hipness, style, and flamboyance of his youth.

The first generation Mazda6 was always admired by enthusiasts; it was lean, engaging, full of feedback, and just plain great fun to drive. It was a cut-price BMW 3-Series in terms of its drive character. Those qualities, however, made it far less appealing for its primary mission – to serve as a solid family sedan. Despite its entertainment value on the road, it was small and cramped inside, noisy, and felt somewhat like a beer can.

Mazda_2009_Mazda6_front34.JPG
The new Mazda6 is uncommonly stylish while ticking all the right boxes for mainstream shoppers

The new 6, however, has soundly addressed each and every single one of those deficiencies that made Camry, Accord, and Altima a more amenable choice for many families. At the same time, it has become even more stylish and easily matches or beats the Japanese Big Three sedans in terms of interior roominess, refinement, interior quality, and comfort. In short, we think it’s one of the most – if not the most – compelling mid-size sedans out there. At the media introduction of the 6 that VehicleVoice staff attended, Mazda was so confident of the new 6’s abilities that they had 4-cylinder and V6 samples of Accord, Camry, and Altima on hand for direct comparisons.
