LA Auto Show - Hyundai Hellion - What is It?
The Role of Concept Cars
Concept cars aren't supposed to be logical, rational, one-step-from-production vehicles. They are supposed to be opportunities for designers and engineers to stretch, to try out new ideas, some of which might not be ready for prime time. They are a way to gather market input... and they are a way to get free PR in the form of column inches.

With that as perspective, the Hyundai Hellion shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show isn't so bad after all. OK, it looks odd, inside and out. And the short wheelbase, 3-door package isn't really what U.S. SUV or crossover considerers are looking for. Sort of a next-generation Isuzu VehiCross, with about as much market potential! Some Hellion features (seat back mounted gear packs that transform into fully functional backpacks; bucket seats equipped with a removable, refillable fluid reservoir allowing the occupants to indulge in hands-free hydration on the go) seem somewhat odd. But that's what concept cars are all about. And it did get column inches!

Rompin' Stompin' Diesel Power - Bring it On!
But the Hellion isn't all whimsy! The powertrain features a 3.0L V6 Common-rail Diesel engine with 236 HP and 332 lb.-ft. of torque, and a six-speed automatic transmission. We might not ever see a vehicle with the appearance, package or features of the Hellion concept vehicle...but I wouldn't be surprised if we see a range of Hyundai vehicles with that engine and transmission.
